The Sceptical Scribe challenged Christians to say something nice about atheists. He got a pretty decent response from one: Atheists think for themselves and examine all available evidence with a critical eye. They tend to be unconcerned with what others think of their opinions, and honest with themselves when presented with empirical evidence contrary to what they might have once believed… Wow. That’s pretty big of the person to say, I’ll admit. Now, can you say something nice — actually,… Read more
We all know Jesus is coming back… right? Right. Larry Falter is capitalizing on it for his Superior, Wisconsin business, LTD Jewelers: Did you know the Bible predicts the day of the Lord, followed by the return of Jesus Christ to Jerusalem? As I read the daily news and look around the world, I believe we’re really close to that day. Nonetheless, here and now, if you want jewelry, I have access to millions. Diamonds and gemstones, gold, silver, watches… Read more
Christians suffer more religious persecution than anyone else. Says the Pope. “At present, Christians are the religious group which suffers most from persecution on account of its faith,” the pontiff asserted, and cited Christian communities suffering from violence and intolerance particularly in Asia, Africa, the Middle East and the Holy Land. “This situation is intolerable, since it represents an insult to God and to human dignity” as well as “a threat to security and peace,” Benedict wrote in one of… Read more
Ray Garton at Atheist Oasis has a message for any Christians who think there’s actually a “War on Christmas”: I don’t know anyone who genuinely hates Christmas. Oh, sure, people complain about it when it comes along — all the commercial hustle, the crowds, the pressure to buy, buy, buy. But ultimately, everyone I know enjoys the holiday and if asked seriously, I doubt they would change a thing. The people I know celebrate the holiday in different ways and… Read more
The Freedom From Religion Foundation has a couple billboards now up in Denver… And that’s the least controversial thing FFRF is announcing this week. They’re also putting a sign like this in the Mississippi State Capitol beginning on December 20th: At this season of the Winter Solstice, may reason prevail. There are no gods, no devils, no angels, no heaven or hell. There is only our natural world. Religion is but myth and superstition that hardens hearts and enslaves minds…. Read more
Recently, the Atheists of Florida decided to protest the Cape Coral City Council’s proposal to have invocations before meetings as well as putting up a Ten Commandments display in City Hall. They protested by making speeches and wearing shirts reading, “One Nation, Indivisible” on a flag background: AoF member Christine Richards said this about the invocation prayers at a council meeting a couple weeks ago: The functional effect of these prayer rituals is that they provide Americans like me only… Read more
You know how you’re full of Christmas cheer right now? Time to put a stop to that. First, a song talking about terrible, horrible things like homosexuality, diversity, and tolerance. You’re probably seething with rage right now. But this will make you feel alllllll better: Once again, true to form, Jesus saves the day in the form of a parrot. (via Christian Nightmares) Read more
The Triangle Freethought Society in North Carolina has a “Reason’s Greeting” billboard up in Raleigh (courtesy of FFRF and local donor Todd Stiefel)… which is really just an excuse to post this awesome picture 🙂 “The Triangle Freethought Society chose this particular sign because it has a great message that works on many levels,” says Mark Zumbach, director of the chapter. “It is humorous. It offers good tidings, similar to Season’s Greetings or Happy Holidays. And it serves as a… Read more
I posted earlier about how the Fort Worth Transit Authority voted to ban all future theistic or atheistic advertising. Zachary Moore was at the board meeting and took this video: I haven’t had time to carefully listen to all of it, but I can direct you to the 15:52 mark where board member Reby Cary talks about how we’re a “Christian nation” sliding away from that false history. If you get a chance to watch it, are there are other… Read more
A while back, I saw Amanda Metskas (executive director of Camp Quest) wearing an awesome scarf: Where did she get one of those? Well, she made it herself. (You can tell from the red strands in the picture that she wasn’t completely done with this one yet.) Now, those of you with knitting skills can make one, too. Amanda has written out the instructions (PDF) on Ravelry so you can create an Atheist scarf of your own: If you end… Read more
