The Sacramento Bee featured atheists on the cover of their Metro page a week ago. The headline read “Atheists stand proud.” On the lower right-hand corner of the page was a story about “a gathering of 13,000 people at Arco Arena put on by the Bayside Family of Churches to raise money for three schools in the region.” Complaints followed. The paper’s Public Editor Armando Acuna explains the controversy: “I’m offended by the (Metro) page,” said Robert Cunningham, 42, of… Read more
I’m almost done with Stephen Colbert’s hilarious new book I Am America (And So Can You!). What does Stephen have to say about atheists? Card-carrying members of BS [Big Secularism] have snaked their way into every branch of the federal government, except for the judicial and executive. Did you know that in the House of Representatives and the Senate, there are as many as one self-described atheist currently serving? Democratic Representative Pete Stark of California’s 13th district, to name just… Read more
I got emails today from the Freedom From Religion Foundation and American Atheists. For what it’s worth, I’m a due-paying member of both organizations. I support them both and will most likely continue to do so in the future. But I think the emails illustrate where the groups are today and which one is going to grow stronger in the future. American Atheists sent out a press release condemning Mitch Albom for calling the high school shooter in Cleveland an… Read more
Dr. Roger Olson, a professor of theology at Baylor University, attacks atheism (but not atheists) in an opinion piece for The Lariat newspaper: We have to recognize atheists’ full freedom to believe God does not exist, but we don’t have to embrace atheism as a social good. In fact, I would argue that atheism has no redeeming social value. Atheism undermines values. How? Let’s look at care for others. Yes, an individual atheist might care for other people. But when… Read more
If you ever wanted to disprove the myth that the American Civil Liberties Union only helps non-religious people, this story is a great one: Capt. Peter Brown — who served in Iraq for more than a year and was a graduate of the elite U.S. military academy West Point — said in a statement issued by the New York Civil Liberties Union that he was relieved the Army had recognized his beliefs made it impossible for him to serve. “In… Read more
Last week, there was a shooting at a Cleveland high school. Columnist Mitch Albom wrote about the killer and described him this way: The shooter, a 14-year-old named Asa Coon, reportedly was into Goth music and dress, claimed to be an atheist and worshipped shock rock singer Marilyn Manson. He wore a Manson T-shirt the day of the shootings — although many were quick to deny any connection between the music and the shootings. To be sure, Albom isn’t making… Read more
Unless you think it looks like the former Pope: From The Daily Mail: Service director Jarek Cielecki, a Polish priest and close friend of John Paul II, travelled to Poland after hearing an onlooker had photographed the image. Father Cielecki said he was convinced the picture showed the former pontiff. “You can see the image of a person in the flames and I think it is the servant of God, Pope John Paul II,” he said. The photographer is just… Read more
Remember the Nightline debate between Kirk Cameron/Ray Comfort and the Rational Response Squad back in May? Comfort invoked the Bible in the debate, which he said he wouldn’t do. Now, he is backtracking and saying he never said he “would prove God’s existence, absolutely, scientifically, without mentioning the Bible or faith.” Even though this original press release says: … Ray Comfort contacted [ABC] and offered to prove God’s existence, absolutely, scientifically, without mentioning the Bible or faith. Way of the… Read more
