ACLU Helps a Christian (Again)

If you ever wanted to disprove the myth that the American Civil Liberties Union only helps non-religious people, this story is a great one:

Capt. Peter Brown — who served in Iraq for more than a year and was a graduate of the elite U.S. military academy West Point — said in a statement issued by the New York Civil Liberties Union that he was relieved the Army had recognized his beliefs made it impossible for him to serve.

“In following Jesus’ example, I could not have fired my weapon at another human being, even if he were shooting at me,” said Brown, who plans to continue seminary classes he began by correspondence while in Iraq.

Brown had asked for a discharge earlier but was denied. The ACLU and New York Civil Liberties Union asked a judge to grant Brown his wish.

“Before the court acted, the Army reconsidered the issue, this time granting Brown’s request,” said the NYCLU, adding it would now withdraw the lawsuit.

As a pacifist, I applaud his morals. The story also demonstrates what I’ve always noticed that religion can be used to justify both extremes.

As a pacifist, I shouldn’t exclude those whose pacifism came from a religious liberal background such as Quaker, or other belief.

  • as the one who you write about, i can attest to the fact that the ACLU and NYCLU have been supportive of me. i asked many Christians to help, but i received mostly insults and ridicule. it was the NYCLU who alone decided to help.

I notice that all the while this Hippy is stabbing American in the back, and the ACLU handed him the knife. Good one, Godless ACLU!

What’s next, some hippy freak saying that Jesus wants us to take care of the poor and the hungry? Get a JOB, Hippies!

I have to wonder why he joined the Army or went to West Point anyway?

It’s a voluntary military, apparantly Jesus is an excuse for anything.
