Indiana atheists are trying to get an atheist bus of their own! But they’re not going for the bus ads… Jennifer explains a slight catch in the advertising rules: The fun part? The cost to get a full bus painted for a year ($1250) is the same as getting a dinky side ad for 8 months. I have no idea why, but wouldn’t it be awesome to have something like this driving around your town? Yes. Yes it would. I… Read more
We’re already taking over buses. It only makes sense that atheists begin to adopt the streets those buses could drive on 🙂 The Atheist Longhorns at the University of Texas at Austin have been doing their part to keep the city clean — nice! Are there other atheist groups out there who are adopting streets or highways in their community? Read more
In a OneNewsNow article titled (I shit you not) “Intelligent Design for Dummies,” Marcia Segelstein explains everything you need to know about ID-proponents in one paragraph: Science was never my forte, and heated debates over Darwinism, evolution, creationism and Intelligent Design never piqued my interest. As far as I was concerned, all that mattered was my belief that God created the universe and everything in it. How He did it, when He did it, and what complex processes were involved… Read more
I suppose we’ll have to get used to this from President Obama. One day, he’ll invite anti-gay pastors to deliver Inauguration prayers. Later that same day, he’ll say “The United States is a nation of Christians and Muslims, Jews and Hindus, and non-believers.” One day, he’ll overwhelmingly invite Christians to join his “Advisory Council on Faith-Based and Neighborhood Partnerships” — then, you hear him saying something like this: I’ve said before that one of the great strengths of the United… Read more
Pastor Rick Warren was already caught on tape lying about his stance on gay rights. He said this on Larry King Live the other night: … I am not an anti-gay or anti-gay marriage activist. I never have been, never will be. During the whole Proposition 8 thing, I never once went to a meeting, never once issued a statement, never — never once even gave an endorsement in the two years Prop 8 was going. Except for the tiny… Read more
Paul Lundgren of Iowa not only wants to thank Fred Phelps for drawing so much attention to why gay people need equal protection and equal rights under the law… he wants to make Phelps an offer! He writes this in an open letter to the anti-gay activist: I am a business entrepreneur in Ames, Iowa, with a proposition for your congregation. As you may have heard, the State Supreme Court has recently ruled in favor of gay marriage under our… Read more
I’ve been reading Kathryn Joyce’s Quiverfull and several passages scare the living $#!& out of me. Like this one, describing a courtship ritual among Quiverfull families: The fairytale marriage story for this generation of patriarchy daughters is that of the courtship and wedding of Brown’s daughter, Kelly, and Peter Bradrick, a former Vision Forum intern and son of homeschooling lecturers Michael and Susan Bradrick… The merging of these two families through the marriage of their young children was featured on… Read more
If my students received the score I just got on this quiz on one of their math exams, I’d be calling their parents. Hopefully, you’ll score higher. One example: If Jesus could heal a blind person he happened to meet, then why not heal blindness? Who said it? A character from South Park or Christopher Hitchens? (via Think Atheist) Read more
This is amusing. Brigham Young University’s student newspaper — The Daily Universe — had to recall all 18,500 copies of Monday’s paper on account of a slight typo. A caption for a picture should have said the following: “Members of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles and other general authorities raise their hands in a sustaining vote…” Instead, it read as follows: “Members of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostates and other general authorities raise their hands in a sustaining… Read more
This is another one of those times when you see the results of a survey and you just scratch your head… The Pew Research Center’s Forum on Religion & Public Life recently released its U.S. Religious Landscape Survey. They found the following result: 5% of American adults say they do not believe in God or a universal spirit, but only about a quarter (24%) of these nonbelievers actually call themselves atheists. If that’s the case, what do non-religious people call… Read more
