I missed his talk at the Texas Freethought Convention/Atheist Alliance of America convention this weekend, but it sounds like Christopher Hitchens was in excellent form even if his health didn’t match his verbal ferocity. PZ was there and said this: He was looking frail and thin, his voice was husky, but he was amazingly strong. He gave a wonderful, fiery, eloquent acceptance speech, and then he took questions for almost an hour — and he was willing to go on… Read more
Chris Dees, the president of the Freethinkers, Agnostics, and Atheists of Mississippi State University, has put together an awesome project to help unite Southern atheists. (Wait, did we just go from no atheist groups in the state to two of them?! Awesome.) The project is called Southern Atheists United for Candid Expression, Freethought, Openmindedness, Reason And Living Life (SAUCEFORALL). Nifty acronym? Check. Oxford comma? No check. Anyway, title aside, the objective is pretty awesome: It will basically be a network… Read more
What do you do when several college atheist groups all exist in the same region? You have a party and invite everybody! SSA affiliates from UC San Diego, UC Riverside, Cal Lutheran University, and San Diego State University are gathering at Morley Field in San Diego on November 5th and they’re inviting any students in the area who might be interested: More information is here. Someone eat a Boca Burger on my behalf! (Thanks to Michael for the link!) Read more
This is a guest post by Catherine D. She is a former liberal Catholic theologian with a masters degree from a well respected school of theology It was during her studies that Catherine had the epiphany that she was not a believer. … The last place you might think to find an atheist or agnostic would be in the pulpit leading a congregation, but you’d be wrong. Unbelieving clergy exist. In fact, we are even organized. Through the efforts of… Read more
This image has been making some rounds on Facebook and found its way into my inbox: It looks like a funny response to the image until you start reading it and find out its Christian propaganda. Do Muslims want to convert or kill non-Muslims? The Koran says yes, but (obviously) most Muslims don’t accept that. The same goes for the Bible, with all of its violent passages. We’re fortunate that in the cherrypicking that religious people do, most come to… Read more
It slipped my mind that today was the day the University of Georgia Atheists were protesting Pastor Mark Driscoll’s event… until I started seeing 349723 comments coming in from Christians trolling the informational post. So how did it go? Well, they caught Driscoll’s attention. He even told his fan club: If you read through those comments, you’d get the impression the atheists were trying to start a riot… which they weren’t. They just wanted to inform the attendees at the… Read more
It’s not just that some Christians want to give out Bibles and tracts and the “gift of salvation” on Halloween. (You always knew which houses in your neighborhood to avoid when you went Trick-or-Treating…) It’s that they are calling this event “Jesus Ween” and they have no idea why 12-year-old boys everywhere are laughing up a storm. So, what’s next? Are Muslims going to start giving away copies of the Koran and call it AllahWeen? Or maybe some celebrity’s gonna… Read more
David Hayward, who draws all those fantastic cartoons about Christianity at nakedpastor, is offering his book nakedpastor 101 as a free PDF download for one day only! You definitely want to check that out. Realize that it’s also a very generous giveaway from someone who relies on sales of his work for part of his income. If you like his stuff, consider getting the print version. I have it and, as even David acknowledges, it’s a great conversation starter when… Read more
Richard Dawkins, promoting his new book The Magic of Reality: How We Know What’s Really True, appeared on The O’Reilly Factor a couple nights ago… If you haven’t seen the clip, here’s the spoiler: It went down exactly how you would have imagined it. As usual, Bill O’Reilly’s ignorance of science was in full bloom: Dawkins: How can it possibly help to postulate a divine intelligence to explain something complicated like [the origin of existence]? O’Reilly: Here’s how it can… Read more
