Brrr! Larry King is hoping for a cold afterlife. The former CNN host told his guests on “CNN Presents: A Larry King Special: Dinner with the Kings” (which aired Dec. 4th) that he wants to be frozen after death “on the hope that they’ll find whatever I died of and they’ll bring me back.” King shared the news with his wife Shawn and a camera crew, with celebrity buddies Conan O’Brien, Tyra Banks, Seth MacFarlane, Shaquille O’Neal, Quincy Jones, Russell… Read more

Dear Richard, I was raised Catholic, wandered away in my mid-teens, became emphatically atheist toward the end of college. To do my parents justice, they’ve never tried to make me feel bad about it, though Mom does turn on the guilt a bit once in a while. Dad’s usually even interested in honest debate! So I’m a lucky one. We’re a very Christmas-centered family, and I never have any compunctions about enjoying the holiday. I don’t really care what I… Read more
I have an affinity for cases in which the Establishment Clause of the First Amendment bumps up against some other law, especially some other fundamental right, such as Freedom of Speech. Here is a compelling example of just that kind of case coming out of Canada: Are the rights of the accused violated if a witness is allowed to testify while wearing a veil? Or, put another way, can people testify in court if you can’t see their entire… Read more
We gripe about church/state separation in America, but in Italy, a *lot* of taxpayer money goes toward funding the Catholic Church. The Union of Rationalist Atheists and Agnostics (UAAR) is trying to raise the consciousness of other Italians on this matter. They’re putting up the following billboard in the cities of Genoa (today) and Venice (tomorrow): That roughly translates to: “With 6 billion Euro per year, Italy could work miracles.” “Some of the budget cuts proposed by the Italian government… Read more
Because she knew he would take the next logical step: My mom always told me there wasn’t a Santa. This was her logic: She thought if I grew up knowing about Santa then finding out he wasn’t real, that it would be like she was lying to me. And then when she told me about God, I maybe wouldn’t believe her. So she just wanted to be straight-up and honest with me all the time. But I didn’t tell my… Read more
They may not be able to have one in Pennsylvania, but the Kansas City Atheist Coalition created their own Tree of Knowledge and it looks great 🙂 The tree’s ornaments are pictures of famous skeptics/atheists who have challenged us to look beyond mindless dogma: They also “adopted” two families in need, buying gifts for the kids and raising $340 for gift cards for the parents. Such a simple gesture, yet so helpful and powerful. And all without the help of… Read more
