The Rock, a community church in Conway, South Carolina, has a special treat for families this Easter weekend: Wow. Maybe next year we can look forward to a Zombie Jesus marketing strategy? Nah, probably not. Silly rabbit, resurrection is for Jesus. (via Justin Griffith) Read more
I’m at the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa today to speak to the Alabama Atheists and Agnostics. Reader Brian pointed out that I might appreciate his AL license plate: Love it! It manages to temporarily avoid controversy… and then creates even more 🙂 Read more
Remember how the Dallas–Fort Worth Coalition of Reason started an advertising campaign called “Our Families Are Great Without Religion”? Remember how they wanted to place this ad in movie theaters to run before the showing of films? Remember how the Green Oaks Movie Tavern in Arlington said they *would not* run the ad? Remember how the Angelika Film Center in Plano stepped in and said they *would* run the ad? Now, they’ve changed their mind due to complaints from Christians…. Read more
Christian Life College — a school in Chicago — is holding its annual Ascension Convention this weekend at a hotel near O’Hare Airport. As it turns out, one of my readers has a connection to the hotel where this convention is happening and noticed these signs plastered all over the place: Ok… time to play the game of “What the hell are the Christians thinking?” Option 1) We can’t have a girl and a boy and NO ONE ELSE in… Read more
No. Because god doesn’t exist. *Point for atheists.* … That’s the message on the church sign outside Rose City Park United Methodist Church in Portland, Oregon. It’s getting a lot of press, too. “It is my hope from our little sign board in Portland, Oregon that perhaps some good discussion will take place among those of all faiths and no faiths. It is my hope in this world that treasures violence over gentleness, the love of power over the power… Read more
Hemant Mehta covered Patrick Greene earlier, prior to new information that has come to light. … The headline goes “Patrick Greene, Longtime Atheist, Announces Conversion to Christianity”. Hmm… what is this new lock-tight argument for Christianity that has converted an atheist? Apparently a few hundred dollars in donations to help him with his vision made the difference. I could say these funds bought his soul, but it’s more inspiring to say the true-Christian show of support opened his heart. Where… Read more
Shawshank Redemption is my favorite movie ever. I’ve seen it several times and could quote entire scenes to you. And yet, I never noticed the connection between Brooks (the elderly inmate) and atheism until I read it at Talking Liberty: Forget Brooks’ age. Forget his gender. Forget the literal setting. Brooks is a metaphor of a person imprisoned by his circumstance. He lives in “prison,” as all wondering theists do, and fears leaving its familiar setting. He has friends there…. Read more
Stall Brook Elementary School in Bellingham, Massachusetts recently decided to change the way they sing Lee Greenwood’s “God Bless the USA” at their pep assemblies. First thought: Good! What an awful song. First, there’s the bad grammar… And I’m proud to be an American, where at least I know I’m free. Greenwood apparently lives in “American”… Then the next lines: And I wont forget the men who died, who gave that right to me. Because no woman has ever given… Read more
