Apparently, the megachurch pastor told his staff yesterday not to follow people like us: Some of you (and some of our church accounts -like our 12 cities accounts) are following people on Twitter that you should NOT be following. I frequently notice that often atheists, critics of saddleback, and mean-spirited or vulgar accounts often have dozens of staff or Saddleback accounts following them! This is true even when these people only have a very few follower. Because of automatic adds,… Read more
Yep, banning straight sex should do it. Where are the petitions from all those homophobic Christian groups?! (via god and son) Read more
In response to the posting about the ridiculously strict rules at Bob Jones University, a reader sent me a “Guide for a Yiddishe Summer Experience” (PDF) — basically the summer camp rulebook for an ultra-orthodox group of Hasidic Jews. Check out these bits… That last bit is the scariest. 1 guy, 1 girl in a car? Not ok. 3 guys, 1 girl in a car? What could possibly go wrong…? The same guidebook also points out that women (sometimes as… Read more
On June 1st Gallup released a poll showing that 46% of American are Creationists. It also showed that only 15% of Americans believe humans evolved over millions of years and that God had nothing to do with it. The vast majority of Americans believe God was somehow involved in their being on this planet. The poll also showed a correlation between level of education and how strongly you believed in Creationism. From our own experience, most of us realize it… Read more
Ron Williams wanted his children to attend a secular school in Australia, so you can imagine his surprise when his children told him they were attending “assemblies where the chaplain presided and a rap song was played extolling the virtues of chaplains over teachers as adults kids could trust.” As it turned out, it was all part of a program funded by the country’s government. In fact, since 2007, schools could be eligible for up to $20,000 if they began… Read more
If you’re near Colorado, you’ll want to make plans to attend the first ever Colorado Secular Conference this July — it’s free and it’s on a weekend! Our goal is to allow secular people from around the region to meet one another, share ideas, and to learn from several different speakers on a variety of topics. This is a golden opportunity for secularists, humanists, atheists, agnostics, freethinkers and others to come together. You can register here. Read more
Remember the video of the four-year-old boy singing “Ain’t no homos gonna make it to heaven”? Initially, when the video was posted, no one knew which church that was. A guy named Mike figured it out, though. The most amazing part about it? Anyone with basic Internet-stalking skills could’ve done it. Morgan Watkins of The Indianapolis Star explains: So he decided to find the video’s source, starting with the user who posted it, Funnyman1972. A search of the user’s videos… Read more
You would think officials from Ellwood City (in Pennsylvania) would have learned their lesson by now… Last year, they allowed a Nativity Scene — and nothing else — to be displayed in the Municipal Building. It was a clear endorsement of Christianity. When they started to see legal challenges come their way, they allowed other groups to submit their own displays. FFRF obliged. There were unnecessary rallies in defense of the Nativity Scene (as if the atheists were coming to… Read more
The Kennesaw State University Atheists United group (in Atlanta, Georgia) has a lot of big events coming up. As any group would do, they’re advertising the events via flyers on campus. On Sunday, someone sent a picture of one of the flyers with what appears to be an honest-to-goodness bloody cross on it to the Twitter account of KSU Atheists United: The KSU group bravely responded with this: The sender seems to think that their red cross is something to… Read more
