Student trustees at Orange Coast College decided to not say the Pledge of Allegiance at their meetings anymore. It doesn’t affect other groups or organizations on campus. They just won’t recite the Pledge at the trustees’ meetings. While the “Under God” portion was part of the reason they made the decision not to say the Pledge, there was more to it than that. Keith Ellison, a Democrat from Minnesota’s 5th district, won his race for a House seat, making him the first Muslim to be elected to Congress. Which should put a stop to anyone who says Muslims can’t get elected in America. Still no openly atheist elected officials, though. How long will it take before that happens? On September 11, Newsweek magazine had an article on “The New Naysayers.” Now, the two other popular news magazines are catching up. Time’s cover story tomorrow is God vs. Science, which features a transcript of excerpts from a debate between Richard Dawkins and Francis Collins. This one hits close to home since Burbank, IL isn’t too far from where I live. After six months of deliberation, Nichole Schultz, a college student and atheist, no longer has to display her city vehicle sticker. The sticker displays a soldier kneeling at a cross. The South Park guys, Trey Parker and Matt Stone, have said in interviews that they were going to poke fun at atheism this season, but I’m not sure any real point was made about it.
