ChooseDoubt saved a drowning child! A two year old boy fell into a river. No one saw him fall in and the river itself looks more like chocolate than water with the amount of silt in it. I noticed that the boy was there one minute and when I turned back he was nowhere to be seen. I jumped in the river and luckily I found him. He’s fine =) He adds: For all those that would add “thank god”… Read more
If you haven’t heard it yet, Dr. Francis Collins, head of the Human Genome Project and an Evangelical Christian, was on Point of Inquiry with DJ Grothe to discuss his work, his faith, and his book The Language of God. DJ asked the questions that most stand out in my mind (especially regarding how Collins reconciles science and faith), and (not surprisingly) Collins gave answers that were fairly unsatisfactory. But the show isn’t intended to be a debate, and DJ… Read more
This cracked me up. Duncan Crary, director of communications for the Institute for Humanist Studies, and Alison Bates, senior campus organizer for the Secular Student Alliance, were featured in Albany, NY’s Times Union newspaper because of their innovative way of getting to work: There’s even a special name for what they do: While most Capital Region commuters are rolling over to hit the snooze button, Crary, with the help of his friend and office mate Alison Bates, drags his 17-foot-long… Read more
This one isn’t really news like Zac Efron was. Jodie Foster has been an open atheist for some time. But she is on the cover of the latest Entertainment Weekly (picture via www.icydk.com): Here’s an excerpt from her interview (p. 41): Are you religious? No, I’m an atheist. But I absolutely love religions and the rituals. Even though I don’t believe in God. We celebrate pretty much every religion in our family with the kids. They love it, and when… Read more
A month ago, a study was released that showed “Atheist and agnostic doctors are as likely to provide care for the poor as religious physicians.” Now, a study shows that “the least religious of all medical specialties is psychiatry”: Among psychiatrists who have a religion, more than twice as many are Jewish and far fewer are Protestant or Catholic, the two most common religions among physicians overall. The study, published in the September 2007 issue of Psychiatric Services, also found… Read more
As the Atheist Alliance International conference draws closer, I will be interviewing a number of the speakers/presenters for this website and elsewhere. One interview will be conducted with Michael Estes. Mike is a member of the Atheist Coalition of San Diego. According to his bio, “He was raised as a Baptist until age twelve when he read The Autobiography of Malcolm X and Introduction to African Civilizations by atheist John G. Jackson. That started him on a journey from religion… Read more
In a piece for the Washington Post’s On Faith site, Daniel Dennett wrote about religious leaders who had a secret (emphases mine): I get mail all the time from religious leaders who admit to me in private that they do not believe in God but think that the best way to continue their lives is to swallow hard and get on with their ministries, concentrating on bringing more good than evil into the lives of their parishioners and those for… Read more
Read all about it here! Unfortunately, we won’t find out how he did until the show’s airing on September 17th. [tags]atheist, atheism, Christian, Wheel of Fortune[/tags] Read more
The $330,000,000 jackpot in the Mega Millions lottery game had four winning tickets over the weekend. One of them was held by a Wiccan (Emphases mine): Elwood “Bunky” Bartlett says a New Age book store made it possible for him to become an overnight multimillionaire. He and his wife, Denise, were on their way to the shop where he occasionally teaches Wicca and Reiki healing when they stopped at a liquor store and bought two $5 Mega Millions tickets for… Read more
