Yesterday, I posted about a Sheriff’s vehicle in Georgia that had a Jesus Fish symbol on the back of it. After that, I learned of another local government agency which promotes Christianity… The Orange Park Police Department in Florida has this prayer on their website (which is in serious need of a redesign): Dear Lord, be with me on my beat This day and every day. Grant that each weary block I walk, May ease a brothers way. Let me… Read more
I always knew strawberries were atheists… anything that can have eight sets of chromosomes must be godless. Reader Walker noticed this while eating his breakfast: That thing is going to sell on eBay for millions. (Thanks to Walker for the image!) Read more
Reader Tony tells me that he met an atheist couple over the weekend. “Bob” and his wife have tried not to impose their atheism on their son. Now, their son has joined the Boy Scouts (with their permission). The Boy Scouts of America have a history of discriminating against gays and atheists. Despite much of the good work they do, they have no qualms about kicking out people who don’t adhere to their interpretation of the Scout Oath. The courts… Read more
I’m going to be visiting St. Louis this weekend! While I’m going to be occupied Saturday night and all day Sunday, I will have a bit of free time… so I’ll throw this out there: Would anybody be up for meeting Saturday afternoon? Can anyone suggest a good place to meet/eat? You can leave a comment or contact me directly. If more than one of you are interested, I’ll post the gathering information on the site 🙂 Read more
Kate and her mother were driving through Atlanta, Georgia when they saw a local sheriff’s van next to them on the highway. More surprisingly, the van had the Ichthys symbol — better known as a Jesus Fish — on the back. Is that legal? … I contacted the Freedom From Religion Foundation. They’re on top of it. Read more
This post is by Jesse Galef, who works for the Secular Coalition for America. He also blogs at Rant & Reason … We got mentioned in an article in Politico today entitled “Atheists keep faith with Barack Obama”. It addresses the view that Obama has been a mixed bag when it comes to the nontheistic community. He’s mentioned us in a variety of speeches, true. But Obama also displays a lot of religiosity and hasn’t made good on some of… Read more
There was an article in a magazine called India Abroad about myself and the blog. You can read it here (PDF). This is my favorite bit: “We have thousands of gods,” [Mehta] points out, arguing that such a plethora created its own dichotomies. This, in turn, results in the fact that over the centuries, religions have come and gone, with few showing the ability to last. Now people are “gung-ho about Christianity, the mythology of our time,” he points out,… Read more
You may have already heard the story of 24-year-old Tenzin Osel Rinpoche, who was tapped as a reincarnation of a high Tibetan Buddhist Lama (a.k.a. tulku) at the age of four. Rinpoche has since left his Tibetan university and may not even consider himself a Buddhist. Reader Jeff points out his favorite part of the Time article: The monks try to pick the bright and promising children, [New York Buddhist Josh Baran] says; but Tibetans also assume the weeding-out function… Read more
When something good happens, it’s easy to attribute it to a god. When something bad happens — or nothing happens at all — god is quickly let off the hook. This cartoon illustrates it perfectly: (via Atheist Cartoons) Read more
This is sweet — a lullaby for atheist parents, from Vastleft and Kevin Hammer. Sadly, the baby makes it through the end of the song in one piece: The lyrics (as I can understand them): Go to sleep, There is no god. Life is complex, Sometimes odd. But your daddy always loves you. No sky monster lords above you. Sleep, my darling; In dreams we fly. When you wake: a new adventure. And ‘tween us, there’ll be no lies. (Thanks… Read more
