I’m sure a lot of Christians would like to know: Where were these cartoons when they were in Sunday School? They’re *so* much more memorable than the cheesy stuff that usually passes for Christian entertainment… (via TheThinkingAtheist) Read more
There’s a site called Kids Give Me Hope that’s basically the opposite of FMyLife. It features short stories that do exactly what you think they do. Reader Lauren pointed out this lovely recent submission: My eight-year-old sister overheard my mother yelling at me because I’m not Christian. Before bed, I watched her kneel and pray. She told Jesus that she was sorry, but she couldn’t believe in him any more. When I asked why, she said “When I die, I… Read more
The comic Married to the Sea takes public domain images and adds captions to them. This one seems especially relevant to the conversation on this site: Obviously, trying to limit damages in the wake of a natural disaster will invoke the wrath of God. You’re trying to circumvent His will. It’s futile to do anything of the sort. (Thanks to Melinda for the link!) Read more
The cartoon (I can’t find the source) makes an excellent point: As one blogger puts it: There’s different views on the Islamic dress for women. Some say it’s very much an oppressive set of clothing that is forced upon women. Now yes, there are cases like that, but you can point to any organized religion and see the very same thing. Shocking, I know, but even in the Christian faith there are examples of oppression. There are also a large… Read more
To any GLBT teenager who thinks life sucks right now because your friends make fun of your sexuality, because your parents have made homelife a living hell, because you think you’re alone… Dan Savage and a whole legion of people who have been exactly where you are right now have a message for you: It gets better. Even as an atheist, I never had to deal with the feeling of ostracism because of my identity in high school. I can’t… Read more
Wait, they burned their own copies of the Koran and they got arrested for it? In a joint statement, Northumbria Police and Gateshead Council said: “The kind of behaviour displayed in this video is not representative of our community as a whole. “Our community is one of mutual respect and we continue to work together with community leaders, residents and people of all faiths and beliefs to maintain good community relations.” … In the video a group of men are… Read more
A few months ago, I asked people for their secular wedding vows — what they said at their weddings that had nothing to do with anything godly — and they delivered. Steven and Rea got married back in July. Since their wedding took place after my posting, Rea promised she’d update me with information about what they did throughout the ceremony. And the wait was worth it. This wedding sounds (and looks) like it was amazing. We released Painted Lady… Read more
It seems like everything has worked out and I’ll be able to attend the Jon Stewart “Rally to Restore Sanity”/Stephen Colbert “March To Keep Fear Alive” in Washington, D.C. on 10/30/10! *Happy dance* I am very excited, to say the least. The only thing that would make it better is a clever poster to haul around. I SEE YOUR POINT. AND YOURS, TOO. I LIKE PEOPLE WHO DISAGREE I’M VERY HAPPY, EVERYONE! SPELLCHECK IS YOUR FRIEND I’M NOT SURE WHERE… Read more
Chris Stedman, blogger at NonProphet Status, has a guest piece for Interfaith Youth Core founder Eboo Patel at the Washington Post On Faith blog. The topic: Molly Norris, the cartoonist who initially suggested Everybody Draw Muhammad Day, who later publicly regretted that decision, and who is now in hiding. A few college atheist groups chose to draw Muhammad as a stick figure with a smiling face, hardly the same thing as the infamous drawing of Muhammad with a bomb on… Read more
Hey, college atheist groups, can’t afford a billboard to let people know you exist? Not a problem. Just chalk positive slogans on the ground and watch the controversy ensue. That’s what the Secular Coalition at Eastern Kentucky University did: Messages from a secular group have been written on sidewalks across EKU. While the writings are drawing some controversy, school officials say it’s all about freedom of speech. A group at EKU called the Secular Coalition is wanting to promote Hug… Read more
