Brian Scibetta thinks he can talk to god, ask him questions, get the answers, and tell you what he said… for the low, low price of $150/hour. He says god told him to charge that amount. I don’t know where to focus my rage: At Brian, who’s (knowingly or unknowingly) conning people; his customers, who are gullible enough to go to him; or King5.com, for publicizing this story… While the narration mentions that not everyone things he’s legit, no skeptic… Read more
Dave Silverman was recently on Fox News to talk about the American Atheists billboard with host Megyn Kelly. Here’s how that interview went down in a nutshell: Nicely done, Internets 🙂 (via Reddit) Read more
Marcia Segelstein has a piece at OneNewsNow about all those atheist billboards that are “bashing” religion: I guess I just don’t understand. Christians (along with Jews and Muslims) gather in groups to worship. Atheists don’t gather not to worship, so why seek out members? What’s there to be a member of? And why should atheists care about stopping worshippers who are just “going through the motions”? Do they think they might get their hands on money once pledged to churches?… Read more
Actress Anne Hathaway was recently on NPR’s Fresh Air to discuss her movie “Love and Other Drugs.” At one point, host Terry Gross brought up the topic of homosexuality and the Catholic Church: GROSS: I should mention, this is maybe a good place to talk about it, that your brother is gay, and he got married in Canada. And I read that your family left the Catholic Church when your brother came out because the Catholic Church is so, like,… Read more
The Dallas – Forth Worth Coalition of Reason has a new bus ad going up today, adding to the mix of ads showcasing atheists as normal, everyday people: It may be bit difficult to notice, but those images are on a backdrop of the American flag. (See? We’re patriotic!) … The campaign is designed to help those interested find the fifteen area nontheistic groups that make up the DFW coalition. “We’d have run these ads on Dallas buses as well,”… Read more
Cranston High School West has this banner hanging in its auditorium: Our Heavenly Father. Grant us each day the desire to do our best. To grow mentally and morally as well as physically. To be kind and helpful to our classmates and teachers. To be honest with ourselves as well as with others. Help us to be good sports and smile when we lose as well as when we win. Teach us the value of true friendship. Help us always… Read more
I don’t like that the Creation Museum in Kentucky is expanding, but it’s their money and they can do what they want with it. I do have a problem, however, with the official announcement being made alongside Governor Steve Beshear. Beshear’s participation in the announcement suggests state incentives for the project may be included. He can say it’s about the new jobs and not theology, but no elected official should be proudly supporting an organization that’s doing everything in its… Read more
American Atheists recently put up this billboard on the New Jersey side of the Lincoln Tunnel: Now, Bill Donohue and the Catholic League have responded with this billboard on the New York City side of the Lincoln Tunnel: We decided to counterpunch after a donor came forward seeking to challenge the anti-Christmas statement by American Atheists. Our approach is positive, and services the common good. Theirs is negative, and is designed to sow division. It’s what they do. So after… Read more
It’s about damn time. SB 1716, a bill allowing civil unions in Illinois, was passed by the House in a 61-52 vote. The State Senate is expected to pass it and Governor Pat Quinn has said he will sign it into law. Making this victory even sweeter was coming home to an “Urgent” Prayer Request email from the Illinois Family Institute that they sent earlier today: Dave Smith is in Springfield with Linda Jernigan, a former lesbian, who has a… Read more
The comedy show Political Subversities recently featured actor Todd Briscoe “defending” Scientology. (The language is probably NSFW.) I enjoyed the last line in particular 🙂 Read more
