I get so many letters just like this, more than I can keep up with, where precious love is jeopardized because despite great effort, one family member is simply not capable of believing any more, and other family members are stuck in their fear, or anger, or pride, or ignorance, or prejudice, or a combination of those. For those people whose letters I have not answered directly, I hope you can find in the ones I have answered some lesson… Read more
If you’re a college student (or a high school senior about to enter college), the deadline for the American Atheists Founders’ Scholarship is January 31st. If you’ve done any activism this past year individually or with a group, if you’ve written letters-to-the-editor which were published, if you were an outspoken atheist in some way or another, you should think about applying. The winner receives a $2,000 scholarship. I’ve had the good fortune of knowing several of the past winners (and… Read more
There are many items on this list and so many more that need to be added… There’s a link for each item so you can see the proof for yourself. I don’t see how anyone can go through this list and then accuse atheists of not having a moral foundation. (via Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster) Read more
I touched on this the other day, but it deserves its own thread. What are my thoughts about vegetarianism? I’ll just start typing and see what comes out… I’ve been a vegetarian my entire life. I’ve never eaten meat, at least not on purpose. (Dammit, Taco Bell, I said Bean Burrito!) I was raised that way because my parents are Jain. Jains believe in non-violence ahead of most everything else, so they’re typically strict vegetarian. For me, that meant no… Read more

One of the ads in the running is all sorts of hilarious: Apparently, the people in line at that church are unaware that grocery stores sell entire bags of Doritos and entire cases of Pepsi… Absurd, funny, amusing… and Catholics — not even… Read more
The owner of the Atheist Tees store on Zazzle, a custom t-shirt design store, contacted me to say one of the images he had up was banned from their site: Why was it banned? It was deemed too violent: Alright… well, Zazzle has every right to get rid of shirts they think are violent… But there are over 2,000 products that deal with the crucifixion. Is the image above really that much more worse than these? So depicting actual violence… Read more
In 2011, there were several news stories about people who wanted guns to be allowed in churches. In Georgia, where guns are banned from religious establishments, one group filed a case with the 11th US Circuit Court of Appeals in order to overturn the ban. Which makes this email I received from Peter all the more interesting: I am a physician and had a patient come see me. He is a retired police office but works for a “Church Security”… Read more
Priest and Professor William J. Byron talks about the importance of Catholic churches finding out why people are not attending church anymore (an idea he attributes to a former corporate CEO): … if businesses were losing customers at the rate the Catholic Church in the United States is losing members, someone would surely be conducting exit interviews. … The church in America must face the fact that it has failed to communicate the Good News cheerfully and effectively to a… Read more
