Greg van de Krol summarizes (via email) the recent chaos brought about by that awful dictator… No, not him. The other one: Speculation has been growing about whether God’s dictatorship will be the next to crumble under the demand for freedom that is sweeping the earth. Yahweh has now ruled without free elections for over 2,000 years. He seized power after the assassination of his son, although some believe it was an inside job. During this time, he has kept… Read more
A prison in Kansas allowed prisoners to use their own accounts to buy pizza and chicken wings, with a cut of all the costs going back to the prison… for a house of worship: The order, which will cost more than $11,000, is part of a fundraiser for the Hutchinson Correctional Center’s planned Spiritual Life Center. The prison will be getting 942 large, hand-tossed pizzas at $8 apiece and will charge inmates $11, with about $3,000 going toward the center…. Read more
Here’s an interesting question from yesterday’s Super Bowl: When the Green Bay Packers’ Nick Collins intercepted the ball and scored a (pretty exciting) touchdown, he got on his knees, threw his hands in the air, and got penalized for it. It was “excessive celebration.” Specifically, the refs said Collins “[went] to the ground after the score.” Ok, fine. Now, cut to later in the game. The Packers’ Greg Jennings caught a touchdown pass and also went to the ground after… Read more
Note: Letter writers’ names are changed to protect their privacy. Richard, I was raised in a very conservative Christian home (and church) before my deconversion at age 30. I don’t believe in God anymore, but I still struggle with the religious programming. I feel guilty about leaving my abusive husband (we were married at age 18). I feel guilty when I think about my choice to not have any more children. And my choice to work outside the home and… Read more

Since some of you had asked… our Speech/Forensics Team did wonderfully this weekend 🙂 We won our Regional tournament and — more importantly — every competitor made it through to next Saturday’s (much tougher) Sectional tournament. So I’ll be staying at work extra late to get these kids as ready as possible for next week’s tournament. Hopefully, we’ll send a bunch of our kids through to the State finals. Needless to say posting here will be relatively light. Expect several… Read more
I honestly don’t know how much of this is accurate. I’d love to know what’s true and what’s not true. A lot of the Mormon beliefs depicted below fits in with my own understanding of the faith (not to mention the South Park Mormonism episode and Julia Sweeney’s explanation of the faith from Letting Go of God). According to the description (written by an atheist): [T]his is an old video used during Bible Study in Mormon youth groups. The claims… Read more
David Hayward admits that some Christian churches are built this way: You have to wonder how many rich pastors and televangelists would continue doing their job (preaching the Gospel?) if their salaries were reduced to what most of their audience makes. Would they have the conviction to keep preaching because “God called them to do it” and money doesn’t have anything to do with that? Would they transfer to a different church? Would they find another line of work altogether?… Read more
Today’s the day my Speech kids compete at the Regional tournament against 10 other schools… the top 4 in each event make it through to the next round. My kids are talented. I’m a nervous wreck. Anyway, while I’m busy with that all day, I leave you this video from anti-choice activist Lila Rose, in which she expresses her desire for all abortions to be done in public… until we all get so sick of them that we would “do… Read more
