You hear all the time that the ACLU is just a group of liberal atheists, but members of the organization (I’m one of them) and those who simply pay attention to what they do know otherwise. Case in point: Christian athletes at Floyd County High School in Virginia put copies of the Ten Commandments up on their lockers, but the administrators put a stop to that: This time, members of Fellowship of Christian Athletes at Floyd County High School say… Read more
It’s hard enough to begin an atheist group at a secular school, but it’s even harder when you go a “religious” campus. The hoops you have to jump through and the stigma from other students and administrators can be overwhelming. But when such a group exists, it’s amazing how many students flock to it. There’s a positive article about the Secular Student Alliance at California Lutheran University in the Chronicle of Higher Education. (The article may only be available for… Read more
I’m not sure how many atheists have this Coexist bumper sticker on their car… Coexisting is fine. I’m all for that. But the sticker seems to imply that we shouldn’t criticize the beliefs of people who cling to these faiths. And that’s ridiculous. By all means, treat religious people with respect. Their ideas and beliefs, though, are fair game for scrutiny. Reader Joe has made a bumper sticker that probably won’t win you any fans… but it offers a quick… Read more
Note: Letter writers’ names are changed to protect their privacy. Dear Richard, I am not asking for advice but being simply curious if I should count my self lucky. Up until the age of 10 my family attended our Episcopal church every Sunday without fail, something I had always hated. At this point I still believed, I said my prayers every day, we said grace at meals, and basically did the usual Christian stuff. I simply hated going to church… Read more
As a male who has no children, I’m not about to make a recommendation to anyone regarding breastfeeding. But reader Mary sent me an article in which the author, Monica Bielanko, says she didn’t breastfeed her kids… for a reason I hadn’t heard before: The real reason I’m not breastfeeding is deeply personal and deeply embarrassing: I’m not comfortable with the concept of busting out a boob anywhere. Sometimes not even my own bedroom. Yes, I have issues. I’m well… Read more

I already posted one young woman speaking out against religion, so why not another? Here’s Laci Green listing off a number of reasons she’s no longer a Mormon: I love seeing people — younger women, older men, everyone in between — speaking honestly and openly about why they’re no longer religious. You could share your personal story of becoming an atheist. You could simply list the actual beliefs you held when you were religious. You could read your faith’s holy… Read more
American Atheists is having their annual convention in Des Moines, Iowa April 21-24, and they’d like to get a billboard up there in the hopes that it’ll enjoy the same level of publicity of their previous ones. Here’s the mockup of the new one: Much like the others, this one calls out specifically to other atheists, but the message will likely be seen by theists as an attack on their faith. In other words, it’ll get its fair share of… Read more
As popular as Christian pastor/author Rob Bell may be, I was surprised to see him as a trending topic on Twitter yesterday. The reason boils down to the content — or at least speculation of the content — of his new book Love Wins: A Book About Heaven, Hell, and the Fate of Every Person Who Ever Lived. According to the product description: … Bell addresses one of the most controversial issues of faith — the afterlife — arguing that… Read more
I was an atheist by the age of 14, but I sure as hell wasn’t this outspoken about it. Here’s what happens when the Bible gets in the hands of an intelligent young woman… *slow clap for saztheatheist* (via Blaghag) Read more
