Nerdiah made a parody of the National Day of Prayer video that actually matches its ominous, yet ridiculous, mood 🙂 I love the last 30 seconds: Now, where is that peanut butter and jelly…? Read more
I’m not the Mormon expert here. But here’s an aspect of Mormonism I’ve never heard before: The 14 Fundamentals in Following the Prophet, the President of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (as stated by Elder Ezra Taft Benson in 1980): The prophet is the only man who speaks for the Lord in everything. The living prophet is more vital to us than the standard works. The living prophet is more important to us than a dead prophet…. Read more
The last time I heard about New Zealand’s Hell Pizza, they were buying a guy’s soul to get publicity. (Meh. It’s been done before.) And now they’re back with something a little more blasphemous. Their new billboards feature hot cross buns… and a reference to Jesus: I don’t see what’s so bad about that… they’re acknowledging Jesus’ existence. You’d think Christians would appreciate that! But they don’t: Anglican Church media officer Lloyd Ashton said the campaign was disrespectful to many… Read more
We all love crashing polls, but most of them don’t have a lot of meaning. They’re often there to bring hits to a website without having any real significance. But here’s a case where your votes could make a difference. A few years ago, my friend Dale McGowan wrote a wonderful book called Parenting Beyond Belief. It’s all about how to raise children without religion, and it features a variety of perspectives on issues so many atheist parents have to… Read more
Terry Jones is the pastor who threatened to burn a Koran on September 11th and finally went through with it a few weeks ago. In response, there have been riots in Afghanistan leading to the deaths of several people. Is Jones to blame for all this? Even if he’s not, should Christians have to apologize for or defend his actions? That was the question posed by the Washington Post On Faith blog and my response is now up at their… Read more
If you weren’t aware that the National Day of Prayer was only a month away, you will be after you see this horrific video: So PRAY… or else God will make dark clouds appear in the sky. And you’ll have to stop playing your Wii. Side note: I wonder if the same person (or group) made the infamous “Gathering Storm” ad in 2009… (via Kate Shellnutt and Hugh Kramer) Read more
Note: All the names and a few details in this letter are changed to protect peoples’ privacy. Hey Richard, I’m a 15-year-old Atheist from a town just outside of a mid-size city in Colorado. My parents are both atheists, and religion was never really talked about when I was growing up. It wasn’t ignored, but I grew up assuming there was no god. That area is extremely liberal, and I went to school there until last year. I’ve never really… Read more
I’ve heard right-wingers say that college is a bastion of secularism — come in as a Christian, leave as an atheist. Here’s Dennis Prager explaining the “problem”: … increasingly large numbers of men and women attend university, and Western universities have become essentially secular (and leftist) seminaries. Just as the agenda of traditional Christian and Jewish seminaries is to produce religious Christians and religious Jews, the agenda of Western universities is to produce (left-wing) secularists. The difference is that Christian… Read more
What’s worse than Rebecca Black’s “Friday” video? The Christian version of it… called “Sunday” (of course). … and the church that made it is located only miles from where I live. *Double face p(s)alm* … You know you want the lyrics… (I tried to transcribe it. My fault if there are any errors) Eight a.m., waking up in the morning Gotta be sharp, gotta do my hair Can’t find a bowl, no time for cereal End of the weekend, the… Read more
I know Greta Christina put this out a little while ago, but I wanted to promote it here: A gigantic list of atheists of color. If you’re helping to organize an atheist conference, and you want your conference to be more diverse and more reflective of the makeup of the atheist community? If you’re an atheist writer or activist, and you want your quotations/citations/blogroll/etc. to be more diverse and more reflective of the makeup of the atheist community? If you’re… Read more
