Last year, I sent spies to an anti-gay-rights “academy” run by Americans For Truth About Homosexuality, a SPLC-certified hate group. Tonight, they’re having a banquet at the same location, the Christian Liberty Academy. Early this morning, someone threw concrete bricks through the school’s windows in an effort to stop them from holding the event. The vandals have stayed anonymous, but they made a post taking credit for what they did on a random website. They also said they would continue… Read more

This story seems pretty innocuous — almost silly — except for one detail. In Bartlesville, Oklahoma, where a new jail will soon be open for business, the Washington County Sheriff Rick Silver is allowing local residents a chance to have a bit of fun and see the new facilities — while raising money for charity. Silver says he will open the doors of the new jail for one night, Friday, November 18, 2011. For $50 you can be processed into… Read more
The Rutherford High School Secular Student Alliance — the group featured in the New York Times last spring — took part in a simple-yet-powerful anti-bullying campaign this past week: Senior Nick Machuca, 17, brought in the project, which has been pioneered at colleges around the nation, to Rutherford High School last Tuesday. “I’m president of the Secular Student Alliance and I thought it would be a great project we could do to support other students,” Machuca said Friday. “I think… Read more
George Carlin never let up on the Catholic Church — or religion in general — in his stand-up, and it looks like the two sides are still doing battle: Although Carlin is gone, comedian Kevin Bartini wants to ensure that he lives on — by naming Carlin’s childhood block in his honor. Here’s the petition Kevin created: Name the 500 block of West 121 Street in honor of George Carlin George Carlin, brilliant and prolific comedian lived and went to… Read more
The students at Wayne State University’s Secular Student Alliance in Michigan auctioned off their souls a couple weeks ago and it was worthy of news coverage. (News coverage for “selling your soul”?! That’s just ridiculous…) More specifically, the students said they’d go to a house of worship for anyone who purchased a soul. During the soul auction, most students walked by the SSA’s table with indifference, often giving them questioning looks. Curiosity was the prevailing attitude among those who stopped…. Read more
As much as I’d love to believe people like the Westboro Baptist folks will get their comeuppance in the afterlife, we all know that’s not gonna happen. But, c’mon, how awesome would it be to see this? (via nakedpastor) Read more
***Update***: The solution is posted here. … I don’t post nearly enough about teaching high school math (my day job) on this page. And since I’m giving more public talks about education these days, might as well write about it here, too 🙂 Last month, after some of my honors’ students learned about composite functions, I put together this extra credit problem (PDF). Because I’m evil. No cheating. Can you solve it? 🙂 If you do, please don’t put your… Read more
