Welcome back to Webcomic Wednesdays. I find that the best way to deconstruct an argument like Paley’s Watchmaker is to analyze every detail. For instance, “Who designed this watchmaker?” or “What am I doing in a desert?” Read more
As Christmas approaches, many atheist parents might be wondering if they should tell their young children about the infamous obese man in a red velvet suit, who goes around the world (overnight) in a flying sleigh pulled by reindeer, slides down chimneys (or possibly picks the locks), and delivers presents (but only if you have been really well behaved). Sounds plausible… One of the major issues for parents is that they don’t want to encourage their children to believe in… Read more
Google “Walter Reed bans Bibles,” and you’ll find a long list of sensational articles lamenting the decision of Walter Reed officials to “ban” Bibles. The rhetoric has it that Walter Reed officials were attempting to prevent families from bringing Bibles to injured family members. Rhetoric has it that the establishment is trying to eradicate Christianity from the nation. Unfortunately rhetoric also has a voice in Congress as Rep. Steve King (R-IA) stood on the floor of the House saying this… Read more
You know that whole “Don’t Be a Dick” thing? This is the sort of thing it’s referring to: Alright, let’s get some things out of the way. Is American Atheists president Dave Silverman talking about Islam (and not all Muslims)? Yes. Good. That’s where the focus ought to be. Is it an accurate statement? Where he states facts, yes. Muhammad was indeed married to a nine-year-old girl. Am I suggesting that Dave should keep his mouth (and typing fingers) shut?… Read more
As of this week, the Seattle Atheists have four different ads circulating on twelve buses throughout the city proclaiming that “1 in 4 is an atheist”: I love the look of the ads… but I cannot figure out where they’re getting this 1 in 4 number. The closest thing I can find is this excerpt from a survey done by the Pew Forum on Religion & Public Life: Among Americans ages 18-29, one-in-four say they are not currently affiliated with… Read more
Because I’m cheap frugal, I’ve never had a Christmas tree since coming to adulthood. While I haven’t missed it, I know that some people just aren’t willing to have a winter season without their holiday decorations. But, as an atheist, what are you to do with all the Baby Jesuses or, really, even the Santa Clauses? Doesn’t he promote blind faith in something ridiculous as well? As it turns out, there seems to be a certain protocol for atheists decorating… Read more
This is a guest post by Lisa. [Personal information has been removed.] … I used to believe global climate change wasn’t real. Raised in a conservative, orthodox Christian church, denial went with the territory. Along with evolution and dinosaurs, climate change fell into the camp of liberal lies. For many, it is unfathomable that people still deny the existence of global climate change and the human contribution. Unfathomable — but true. In fact, the denial of climate change is still… Read more
The UGAtheists at the University of Georgia in Athens is still trying to stop sectarian prayers from being recited during graduation. The prayer makes several references to “God” but not “Jesus”… so says the university by way of justification. So that makes it ok, right? Stephen Joiner, the public relations chair for UGAtheists, is leading a group of about 30 students, many of them members of UGAtheists, in the fight to remove the prayer said during graduation. The group has… Read more
