Via the excellent Cectic: Where is the line between natural and supernatural, and what would it take for you to admit that the line has been crossed? [tags]atheist, atheism[/tags] Read more
Equinox Fitness Clubs have a racy new ad campaign that basically shows what having a nice body can do for you. For example, here is photographer Ellen von Unwerth’s ad that features hot nuns and a nude male model in a David-like pose (click on image for larger version): You can see all four ads in the series and learn more about the campaign here. Not surprisingly, that figure-drawing image makes for one angry, angry Catholic League president Bill Donohue:… Read more
The Exterminator at No More Hornets regales us with his mastery of numerology and shows us something remarkable! On a news report, I saw three people holding signs that said “Go Huckabee.” Taking the numerology of each sign: G = 7O = 15H = 8U = 21C = 3K = 11A = 1B = 2E = 5E = 5Those numbers total 78.Reduce to simplest form: Add 7 + 8 = 15.Reduce again: 1 + 5 = 6.So those three “Go… Read more
Recently, an atheist billboard that was moved to a new location was replaced with one reading “The previous sign posted at this location does not reflect the values or morals of our company. Thank you.” It hasn’t even been a week. A new billboard is up in the same Chambersburg, Pennsylvania area. It also poses a rhetorical question… one that is loaded with bigotry: What’s up with that? Jim Crumley of Trio Strategies, a public relations firm in Northern Virginia,… Read more
Mary didn’t like Jesus Camp. In a posting titled, “How To Make a Crappy Documentary,” (LINK FIXED!) she lists the following as one of the ways to do just that: Call your documentary “Jesus Camp,” but focus very little on the inner workings of an actual Evangelical Christian summer camp. Really just make your movie about how you think Evangelical Christians are f*cked up and how scared you are that they actually have the right to vote in America and… Read more
***Update***: I need to clear up a mistake I unfortunately helped spread. The billboard was moved from its first location to a new one (as contracted). The plans still have it going to a third location. The billboard was not “taken down.” The company simply put up a response in the first location after the FFRF sign was moved. I’ll change the relevant parts of the posting below to reflect that. … The Freedom From Religion Foundation had signed a… Read more
A lot of you are part of local or college atheist groups. Are you doing anything special for Darwin Day (February 12th)? The University of Washington Secular Student Union has a full slate of activities planned. And a nifty poster, too: A full list of Darwin Day activities around the world can be found here. Republican Presidential candidate Mike Huckabee often peppers his speeches with religious references — most likely to appeal to his Evangelical Christian base — but there’s a problem with that. Most people don’t understand the references… including many Christians! NPR’s All Things Considered spoke “Huckabese” to people in Washington, D.C. Let’s see if they caught the allusions: For the next quiz question, we played a clip from Huckabee’s Super Tuesday victory speech: “Sometimes,” the former Arkansas governor told his supporters, “one… Read more
I know you had your fingers crossed, but the Utah House of Representatives voted against removing “Under God” from the Pledge of Allegiance: The House voted 58-5 in favor of a resolution sponsored by Rep. Kerry Gibson, R-Ogden, that reaffirms the state’s commitment to “under God” from those who would want it stripped from the Pledge. … Five Democrats voted against the measure. It now goes to the Senate. Anyone want to take a guess as to how that vote… Read more
The “100Revs” Statement says this: As ministers of various churches and denominations we recognise that the churches we belong to, and the church in general, have not been places of welcome for gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender (GLBT) people. Indeed the church has often been profoundly unloving toward the GLBT community. For these things we apologise, whatever the distinctive of our Christian position on human sexuality – to which we remain committed. We are deeply sorry and ask for the… Read more
