Last night, Lori Lipman Brown of the Secular Coalition for America appeared on The Colbert Report. Here is the segment! I thought she did a wonderful job 🙂 And the piece was hilarious, even from an atheist perspective. If you know how Stephen Colbert does his interviews, then this fits right alongside all his others. If you’ve never seen the show before, you might be confused. With two hours of filming edited down to five minutes, they can make Lori… Read more

Tonight, Lori Lipman Brown — the Executive Director of the Secular Coalition for America — is scheduled to appear on The Colbert Report (after being bumped last night). In anticipation of her “Better Know a Lobbyist” segment, other organizations are already sending their congratulations. Here’s a statement from the Council for Secular Humanism: The Council for Secular Humanism congratulates our friends at SCA on securing this opportunity to promote awareness of the nonreligious community in the United States. The show… Read more
If you go to the website for the 2008 Republican National Convention, you can search for videos. Right now, no videos exist since the convention has not yet begun. But that hasn’t stopped something strange from happening. When you click on any of the video links (“Main Feed,” “En Español,” etc.)… instead of a video popping up, you get this odd little image instead: What the heck is that?! It’s a symbol for the Simcoe Muskoka Catholic Virtual Learning Centre… Read more
Only a couple days after the first post, you all have sent fantastic letters to Senate candidate Kay Hagan’s campaign as well as to her opponent (and anti-atheist fearmongerer) Elizabeth Dole and thrown a lot of support her way. So far, you’ve raised $1620 and that’s only counting the people who commented on this site. Here’s one more incredible letter sent by reader Sarah Hewitt to the Dole campaign: To Ms Dole or to the reader of this e-mail, I… Read more
Last night was a blast. Barack was excellent. I hope to see Lori Lipman Brown on The Colbert Report tonight. I’ll give an update on the Kay Hagan fundraising drive later today. But first, I need to focus on wrapping up the first week of classes at my high school. My new students have been great so far 🙂 Consider this an open thread to discuss whatever is on your mind. What would happen if Pastor Rick Warren, fresh off his moderating of the Jesustastic Presidential Civil Forum, were given his own magazine? It might look something like this: Laugh all you want. It may not be long before you see Purpose — Pastor Rick Warren’s actual proposed new magazine — on your bookshelves. A test-issue could be out this fall. (via Mixed Media) Read more
If this posts correctly, then as you read this, I’ll be at a party in the suburbs of Chicago watching Barack Obama deliver his acceptance speech to be the first African-American (Halfrican-American?) presidential candidate from a major political party. And I’ll be thrilled. Since Lori Lipman Brown is not appearing on The Colbert Report tonight, there won’t be a need to rush home. I can just enjoy the speech with the other party attendees. (And make plans to watch Lori’s… Read more
I know everyone was excited about watching the Secular Coalition for America’s Lori Lipman Brown appear on The Colbert Report tonight. Some bad news: The broadcast of her interview has been postponed. It looks like it will be airing tomorrow night (in a first-ever Friday night broadcast). Not sure what the reason for the “Colbert Bump” is, but these things do happen. Hopefully, we’ll get to see the segment tomorrow. More updates as they come. Read more
Last year, it was a few months before my students found out about my book. This year, it took two days. I’ve already had this conversation: Student: I bought your book on Amazon! Do you get any money for that? Me: Well, yeah, I do get royalties. Student: Do you get royalties if I bought a used copy for $1.87? Me: Umm… no, I don’t think so. Maybe three cents. Student (smiling): You’re welcome. Read more
