It’s under two minutes, and you should watch the whole thing. From Now on PBS: I want to cite Poe’s Law but I think she’s really just that crazy… (Via Cynical-C Blog) Read more
David Hayward draws this cartoon: Come to think of it, we rarely hear about Christians who disagree with their pastors — and dare to say so publicly. If you used to be a Christian, did you ever call your pastor out on anything s/he said in church because it was wrong or misguided? (That is, before you became an atheist.) Some of you reading this are current Christians. Has anyone in your church criticized (with good intentions) your pastor to… Read more
Last time, I ran this contest (in reference to the naked mass that took place in the Netherlands): What comments were overheard during the naked mass? Here are the Top 10 lines overheard (with submitters): 10| “Now, would everybody please use the back entrance, that way no accidents will happen.” (elianara) 9| “Dude, whatever you do, don’t close your eyes when you receive communion.” (Scott Flowers) 8| “I know you guys love communion, but there’s no need to press up… Read more
Remember that attack from the Elizabeth Dole campaign against her opponent for a North Carolina Senate seat Kay Hagan? Now, the National Republican Senatorial Committee has put it to video. Wow. It’s all absurd, of course. No one has to be afraid of the Godless. While many atheists would like to see “Under God” removed from the Pledge of Allegiance and “In God We Trust” removed from our money — The Pledge and paper money were both God-free before the… Read more
Scikidus had the idea for the image, and I’m just throwing out some other versions: I *so* know how I’m teaching imaginary numbers to my classes this year. (via To Whom I May Concern) Read more

As Charlie Savage reported in yesterday’s edition of The New York Times, the Department of Justice had approved a million-dollar-plus grant to an organization that will only hire Christians, effectively supporting religious discrimination. The 25-page document, which was issued in 2007, only became available on the DOJ’s website this week. You can read it here (PDF). Here’s what the document says: You have asked whether the Religious Freedom Restoration Act (“RFRA”) — which prohibits the Government from “substantially burden[ing]” religious… Read more
Lisa Faires and Brad Pritikin question why people use the word “agnostic” when they really mean “atheist.” The full comic might make your head hurt, but the conclusion seems to nail it. Some people are just too afraid of the word “atheist.” It’s nothing to be ashamed of! As Stephen Colbert says: Agnostics are just atheists without balls. Read more
Mike O. attended a conference session run by David Kinnaman, author of a really interesting book unChristian. Kinnaman is president of The Barna Group, a sort of Gallup polling group for the Christian world. He presented several statistics about non-Christians and where we get our perceptions of Christians: Where do young non-Christians get their perceptions of us? 59% from churches 50% from Friends 48% from other religions 44% from books 40% from parents 31% from TV/movies 16% from music Also… Read more
How many times did Barack Obama and John McCain use the word “God” in the three Presidential debates? Zero. Not a single mention. Not even “God Bless America.” Just as it should be. We have real problems to solve in our country. That means we need real solutions. Prayer doesn’t cut it. God isn’t going to help. Massimo Calabresi of Time offers this explanation: … John McCain believes religion is a private matter. He was raised an Episcopalian but now… Read more
