It’s the new year. We need to start it off right. With Jesus on pita bread. To the surprise of absolutely no one, it’s being sold. Hungry, one morning last week, I decided to heat up some pita bread. I broke it into little bits and left it in the oven for about two and a half minutes. After the pieces began to blacken I took them out. Oddly enough one piece even looked like the “face” of Jesus. I… Read more

***Comments are now allowed on this post*** … (This is a guest post by Trina Hoaks. Trina is the Atheist Examiner at Examiner.com.) … For some time I was convinced that it was important for our government to support the sciences by way of funding. Among other things, I had seen pleas from the likes of Michael J. Fox, who suffers from Parkinson’s disease, imploring people to support politicians who fight for government funding of science. Admittedly, I didn’t give… Read more
Laura and Procrustes at State of Protest envision a frightening scenario… Say what you will about Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich, one courageous thing he did was to require pharmacists to fill prescriptions in Illinois — they couldn’t refuse giving you the morning-after pill, for example, because they didn’t believe it was moral to take them. Unfortunately, the Illinois Supreme Court is now going to hear a case that could overturn that law. Read more
The Religious Right extremists now have another reason to burn Harry Potter books. Daniel Radcliffe, the actor who plays Potter in the movies, is an atheist. Need proof? We got lots of it. In a recent interview on Inside the Actors Studio (with host James Lipton), there is an exchange where Radcliffe explains that his father has a Northern Irish background and his mother is Jewish (with an Anglicized name). He then adds: … I wasn’t really brought up in… Read more

***Update***: ABC is no longer doing this story, I’ve edited the post to remove the contact information … A while back, I posted about a reporter wishing to do a piece on atheists who have not come out to family/friends yet. Or you have come out and suffered because of it. Many of you responded and I sent your contact information to the reporter. (Thanks!) It looks like a few more people are needed. Here is an email from the… Read more
This isn’t really atheist-related. A couple nights ago, Rachel Maddow was discussing the Israel/Hamas situation on her show. She opened with a brief overview of what the fighting is all about. I thought it was easy-to-follow and really informative. Is it simplified? Absolutely. But in five minutes, not bad at all. So for anyone who reads headlines with the words “Middle East,” “Hamas,” “Fatah,” “Israel,” “Palestinian,” and then skips to another story because you have no idea what’s going on,… Read more
(This is a guest post by Trina Hoaks. Trina is the Atheist Examiner at Examiner.com.) … In her article, Darwin shouldn’t be hijacked by New Atheists — he is an ethical inspiration, Madeleine Bunting accuses atheists of using Darwin as their poster boy, so to speak. With this in mind, it is not so hard to understand why she has such a bad reputation in certain circles. Her article, if nothing else, can be seen as controversial, as the original… Read more
Dan Savage’s reader asks the question in his latest column: Dear Dan: Is “saddleback” a sex act? If not, can you define it as one? Or if it is, can you popularize it? Each time I hear about Rick Warren, I can’t get past the name of his church. Jeffy Lube Stephen Colbert joked on his show that “saddleback” was a sex act, but he didn’t define it. So I guess we’ll have to. Suggested definitions can be sent to… Read more
