I wrote about Kate and Erik a while back — they’re the atheist and Christian couple who found a way to make their relationship work. Both comment on this site frequently. There’s a bit of an update… They’re engaged! I take full credit, of course. (The first child better be named Hemant.) Congratulations to them 🙂 Read more
The Baldwin who bleeds Christianity… has filed for bankruptcy. A filing Tuesday in federal court in New York shows that Baldwin owes $1.2 million in two mortgages on a property about 30 miles north of New York City valued at $1.1 million. The document shows he also owes more than $1 million in taxes and has about $70,000 in credit card debt. I can’t understand how his radio show for Christian teens, BMXRadio, hasn’t made him a rich man… Read more
A candidate judge in South Africa was being grilled by the Judicial Service Commission. The judge, Senior Counsel Torquil Paterson, made this comment regarding why he left the priesthood to work in law: “I left the church for a variety of reasons, chief among them being that I realised God does not exist. I am an atheist.” Paterson, whose lengthy theological studies included a stint at Oxford University, explained that he had eventually come to the conclusion that “all language… Read more
Usually, Christian goods are pretty crappy compared to the real, secular versions… but the acting in this Christian porn is *way* better than anything I’ve ever… um… read. It’s possibly NSFW. So *that’s* how Quiverfull families happen… ***Update***: Totally missed this the first time. The lady in the sketch is Stephanie Courtney (the one from the Progressive commercials). Thanks to Jimmy for pointing that out. (Thanks to Ashley for the link!) Read more
Dear Richard, Another book related question! Yay! I love books. I’m almost at the level of Thomas Jefferson in that regard. I can’t deny myself a book. Today, I broke my prohibition on going into bookstores and walked out with an arm load. While I can imagine having books stacked floor to ceiling, my wife likes them on bookshelves. There just aren’t enough shelves or enough room to add more. I think I need to start getting rid of some… Read more
Well, this is just embarrassing for my people. Not as bad as having to marry a tree before your husband, but still nothing to be proud of. Indian astrologers are predicting violence and turmoil across the world as a result of this week’s total solar eclipse, which the superstitious and religious view as a sign of potential doom. … In Hindu mythology, the two demons Rahu and Ketu are said to “swallow” the sun during eclipses, snuffing out its life-giving… Read more
Hello, Ron Gold here: The Community Issues Council, a Christian group opposed to the separation of Church and State, has gotten into the billboard business. They’ll soon have 10 up across Florida, including this one below: There are a couple of problems with these billboards. Not only will it be tough to comprehend a long, complicated sentence when speeding down the highway, but also, some of them will have fictitious quotes. Even the group’s local chapter president, Terry Kemple, admits to this: The billboards showcase quotes… Read more
Despite what some *cough* recent books *cough* may say, science communication is just as good today as it always was. It’s only getting better. Chris Hallquist feels that some people have been saying otherwise: … I get the impression [Unscientific America] revives the current-science-communication-is-worthless line that Mooney, Nisbet, and their ilk have been using for awhile. This line is nonsense, and I know it’s nonsense because I know I’ve benefitted a lot from already-available popular science, and I’ve talked to… Read more
This post is by Jesse Galef, who works for the Secular Coalition for America. He also blogs at Rant & Reason … Back at school, I signed up for a class that was listed as “Religion in Culture”. I thought it would be an interesting overview. As it turned out, the grad student teaching the class had other, more specific ideas, and the class ended up as “Evangelism and Sports”. It was interesting, and I’ve been dying to use the… Read more
