This post is by Jesse Galef, who works for the Secular Coalition for America. He also blogs at Rant & Reason … In part of our trip to the Creation “Museum” we saw a presentation called The Ultimate Proof of Creationism or some such. To our collective lack of surprise, it was nothing of the sort. In the presentation – and a consistent theme in the museum – was the notion that everyone is looking at the same facts, but… Read more
Among the 300+ group visiting the Creation Museum last week were Aaron Gardner and his wife. They are both evangelical Christians. Aaron says he wanted to answer the question: “What would it be like to be a Christian and a fly on the wall as a group of atheists peered at exhibits that attempted to prove them wrong?” I’ll admit, that’s a pretty cool experiment on his end. Almost like an atheist visiting churches… So, after he put on his… Read more
The Iowa Atheists and Freethinkers have been through a lot over the past week due to their bus ad: When it was taken down on account of being offensive, Governor Chet Culver decided to chime in: “I was disturbed personally by the advertisement and I can understand why other Iowans were also disturbed by the message.” He never explained what about it was so disturbing. Now that the ads are back up, maybe the governor would like to explain himself?… Read more
Just a reminder for anyone attending Dragon*Con (September 4th through the 7th) in Atlanta that the Skeptics’ track added a very cool new event taking place the evening before the conference and it’s not too late to sign up. A star-gazing party will be hosted by astronomers Phil Plait and Pamela Gay, with proceeds benefiting cancer research. All the details are here. (Thanks to Maria for the link!) Read more
There are plenty of posts explaining what’s inside the museum and the real science behind all the deceptions. You can read those elsewhere. Outside the science, I managed to come away from the weekend learning quite a bit: Cats that give me allergies are evil. I have been focused too long on atheist license plates as a way to display your beliefs. I completely ignored the possibility of promoting your beliefs on the backs of trucks! Indiana is scary. I… Read more
The Fresh Air Fund offers free summer vacations to children in low-income areas from New York City. It lets them enjoy the countryside and have a positive summer experience. The Fresh Air Fund is still looking for host families to house a child this month. If you live in the Northeast, it’s not too late to help out this summer. It would be quite the Humanistic outreach to help these children. You can learn more about how to do that… Read more
Looks like God is angry with the atheists who visited the Creation Museum: UGH! How dare those stupid bloodsucking atheist bastards even step foot in My Divine Creation Museum?! I should have burned them to a crisp or attacked them with swarms of locusts as soon as they walked through the door. BAH! Tis’ no matter. I shall infest all of their genitals with open sores. I don’t know what God is (*itch*) talking about. (via Stuff God Hates –… Read more
Susan Hutchison is a former news anchor at KIRO-TV in Seattle. There’s some drama in her life, but what’s relevant here is that she’s running for King County executive (similar to a mayor). Mountain Humanist noticed something odd in her bio, though. Since leaving KIRO Hutchison has been very, very busy. She has her own consulting business. She is the executive director for the Charles Simonyi Fund for the arts and sciences which among other things, supports the work of… Read more
Alec Burchick must not have visited the Creation Museum. The 9-year-old boy claims to have discovered a spearhead that is 6,000 year old. But that’s unpossible. The world was just created then. No one would’ve been around to create the spearhead, and the “European explorers” the piece refers to would not have existed. We can thank Ken Ham for my new education! (Thanks to Walker for the link!) Read more
***Update***: Picture is here: (Thanks to GreyTheory for the link) … I haven’t come across a picture of it yet, but this is entertaining. Greenpeace has put a billboard up in Halifax and Ottawa in Canada. It reads: “There’s probably no cod. Now let’s stop overfishing & think of the future.” Nice spoof of the atheist bus campaign 🙂 The ads will be up for the next month and, yes, they will also be put on buses. (Thanks to Shawn… Read more
