As I write this, nearly 500 people have donated nearly $25,000 to various charities, courtesy of Foundation Beyond Belief. You can help us get past those numbers. The New York Times article from last month really put the Foundation in the spotlight and the money we’re raising is really appreciated by the different beneficiaries. They’re amazed at the generosity — the fact that it comes from a group of atheists is just an added bonus 🙂 Now, we’re trying to… Read more
Note: When letter writers sign with their first names instead of a pseudonym or nickname, I randomly change their name for added anonymity. I send my 6 yr old daughter to the only private school in our small town. Naturally, it is a catholic school. I love the people and the education she is getting. However, she goes to Mass every day and comes home with religion homework and wants me to read the Bible to her. I am very… Read more
Yesterday was the Texans for Truth rally, urging elected officials to fight back against the revisionist history being proposed by the conservatives on the state’s Board of Education. They had a lot of supporters there and some very positive coverage in the local media: As the video points out, the revisionist history that’s being proposed would deemphasize Thomas Jefferson, among other things. Christopher Hitchens wasn’t present at the rally but he did send along a message, which was read out… Read more
Here’s a story that shows just how misguided religion can be. It takes place in Phoenix. (What? A problem in Arizona? Never!) Sister Margaret McBride, who worked as an administrator at St Joseph’s Hospital and Medical Center, was recently demoted. Why? Because several months ago, a female patient “had a rare and often fatal condition in which a pregnancy can cause the death of the mother.” McBride was the leader of an ethics committee that decided the best course of… Read more

Raising children when you’re an atheist parent is tricky, especially when your children start asking the “Big Question.” (Dale McGowan has written a couple excellent books on this very subject.) Kelli Gorski is wondering how she’s going to talk to her daughter about these issues: … when my daughter, Lulu, comes into contact with someone who tells her that a god is real and if she doesn’t believe she’ll go to hell, or when one of the kids in her… Read more
Reader Caley thinks that just because he gets a character from Sesame Street to say he’s an atheist who eats babies, that I’ll automatically post it. He would be right 🙂 Read more
The job market is tough right now. I can tell you from experience that finding a teaching job in certain markets is *really* hard right now since many districts are laying people off left and right. Some teachers in Canada are resorting to extreme tactics to secure a position: They’re pretending to be Catholic: “I don’t particularly like going (to mass) every Sunday, but if this is what I have to do, then I’ll do it,” said a Toronto-area woman,… Read more
I know you’re excited about being done with school and Glenn Beck speaking at your graduation and all… But you should really double-check the spelling on the top of that graduation cap… Especially before you put the picture up on the school’s website. Hilarious. (via Kevin) Read more
***Update***: If you took any pictures at the event, please tag them as “GreatGlobalKissin” on Flickr so a compilation can be put together! … Man, all hell broke loose the last time I wrote about a Kiss-In. But it’s happening again and it’s bigger and better than ever. So what is a kiss-in? This kiss-in is to make a public statement for love, freedom and equality in your local community. A kiss is a simple expression of love and affection… Read more
