Every now and then, an email comes along that I’m compelled to share with all of you. With the writer’s permission, I’m posting this one. She mentions this site, but I really do believe any thank-yous must be shared with all of you who blog, who run atheist groups, and who are just open about your atheism. You’re making it easier for other people to come out of the closet: I grew up forced to attend a conservative Southern Baptist… Read more
Matt Dillahunty, president of the Atheist Community of Austin and host of The Atheist Experience, took part in a debate on the source of human morality. It took place at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County and his opponent was Father Hans Jacobse, a priest who heads the American Orthodox Institute. The whole debate is now online (in several parts) here: The audio quality isn’t great, but you can definitely hear everything. How do you think he did? Read more
A late night rant here. Hope this makes sense. Do other atheists just roll their eyes when they read articles like the one in today’s New York Times by Mark Oppenheimer? But while Mr. [Marco] Rubio, 39, presented himself on his Florida Statehouse Web site and in interviews as a Roman Catholic, bloggers and journalists have noted since his election that he regularly worships at an evangelical megachurch whose theology is plainly at odds with Catholic teaching. For much of… Read more
“Ask an Atheist” is a cable access TV show in Seattle where viewers can call in and ask questions to a panel of local atheists. Unfortunately, the TV station itself is going off the air at the end of 2010. The show won’t go down with it, though. It will move over to the radio at KLAY 1180AM. In order to obtain the seed money for the first few episodes, the crew is holding a benefit comedy show (featuring local… Read more
Commenting on the recent post about atheist billboards and ads around the country, our friend hoverFrog said, I think that Alaska needs one too. Sarah Palin needs to be filmed standing in front of an atheist sign. For the lols. With nothing to do on the post-turkey gluttony day, I thought I’d indulge in some fantasy fulfillment by way of Photoshop: Perhaps readers who like photo manipulation can create, or people can simply describe their own scenes of where and… Read more
The National Day of Prayer Task Force in Austin is (as far as I can tell) a non-profit, tax-exempt religious group. They have put up a series of billboards promoting their website and (of course) prayer: As you all know from seeing the barrage of atheist billboards over the past couple years, there’s nothing wrong with putting up advertisements advocating your point of view. But what about this NDOP billboard that was up before the elections in November…? Donna Campbell… Read more
Karen Frantz, the Communications and Policy Director for the American Humanist Association, wrote a blog post for her graduate school online magazine about all the atheist advertisements in America that popped up in 2010. Atheist advertising isn’t new — many organizations have been advertising on billboards and buses and in newspapers and magazines for the last few years. However, efforts have picked up in 2010, especially with the formation of the United Coalition of Reason, a national organization that helps… Read more
I had to sit through the whole thing. Now it’s your turn: As a teacher (and perhaps eventual parent), I kind of want to say “Yes, those are good ideas.” You should just listen to the adults and do what you’re told. Every other part of me wants to scream, “GO BREAK THE GODDAMN RULES!” And “Fuck tha Police!” So where do you draw the line? George Carlin said it so well when he spoke about the commandment, “Honor thy… Read more
So true. A pastor I know once used that Darwin cover to show people that scientists were “questioning evolution.” (via Saturday Morning Breakfast Cereal) Read more
