Every now and then, there are some issues with this website on the operational end… and I don’t have the skills to take care of it. Maybe a plug-in doesn’t work correctly, or there’s an issue with the server, or MySQL is being weird, or there are error logs that need to be looked at, or [insert your own problem using tech jargon here]. It’d be really helpful to have someone I can go to who might be able to… Read more
You’ve all seen this license plate before: As an atheist, that plate is near and dear to my heart. So you can imagine my sadness at learning that the plate was revoked by the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles because a few people found it offensive. The owner of the plate explains what happened: I received a second letter saying that I would then be going into a sort court hearing about it over the phone. There would be me,… Read more
Hey Richard, I’m a 24 year old Graduate Student who is engaged to a wonderful and beautiful woman. We love each other very much but we are having a difficult time organizing our wedding. I am an Atheist and she is a catholic. I was raised in the Catholic church (which is why I am allowed to be married in a catholic church after stating I don’t believe), but after college and life events I decided to come out as… Read more
This is a guest post by Jamie Bernstein. Jamie is a graduate student in public policy at the University of Chicago. … For those who have been reading this blog for awhile, you might remember a guest post I wrote back in May where I talked about meeting Andrew Wakefield, getting my picture with him, then handing him a note with my true feelings for him to read later. If you’re still not really sure who Andrew Wakefield is, here’s… Read more
I wrote this post almost word for word two years ago. In fact, I just copied/pasted it, updating a few things along the way. It’s sad how little has changed since then regarding atheists in Congress. … What are the religious affiliations of members of the 112th Congress? Pretty similar to the American public — Overwhelmingly Christian with a spattering of Jews, Muslims, and followers of other faiths. Except in one category… The “Unaffiliated”? We apparently don’t exist in Congress…. Read more
A few days ago, I taped a podcast with the guys at Agnostic Radio. It was a fun conversation about this site, atheism in America, and what atheists ought to be doing to get our message out there. Check out their show if you don’t already! Read more
Atheists may get angry at the idea of a god. We might get angry at the way people follow their gods. We might get angry that so many people believe in a god. But we don’t get angry at god. We can’t get angry at god because we don’t believe one exists. So you can understand why this new “research” about atheists and our anger toward god makes very little sense: … And yet people get angry at God all… Read more
Back in November, members of the New Destiny Baptist Church in Detroit came together for an important prayer: They will then travel to Ford Field, link hands and surround the stadium with a human chain of souls seeking intercession on behalf of the once-proud Lions. They were praying for the success of the football team. I wrote at the time: You know, at some point, the Lions will probably have a winning season again. It won’t be this year. But… Read more
So I’m driving home from Wisconsin after a weekend away with the Ladyfriend. She’s very tired and decides to take a nap on my shoulder. No big deal. I can drive just fine. I get on a local road and I see a cop in my rear-view mirror somewhere in the distance. That’s fine. I slow down to where I’m driving slightly under the speed limit and keep going. No problem, right? I’m driving for *miles* and the cop is… Read more
When American Atheists put up this billboard in Alabama this week, I knew it would get attention, but I also felt it would be much more difficult to defend: To the atheists who sit in pews each week despite not really believing what they’re told, it makes sense to say “You know it’s a myth.” But can you really tell to people they’re being “scammed”? AA President Dave Silverman had to defend that statement and he was on The O’Reilly… Read more
