Rep. Pete Stark (D-CA) — the only openly non-theistic member of Congress — was one of only two politicians who spoke (via video) at the Reason Rally. These were his comments: Best line (1:29): “I’ve noticed that, ironically, the more a member of Congress talks about religion, the less they do to help people.” (via @americnhumanist) Read more
Mark Rosengarten took some great videos of speeches at the Reason Rally — these three in particular: Richard Dawkins: Adam Savage: Jessica Ahlquist: (Thanks to Graham for the link!) Read more
It’s tough to get elected to Congress in general, much more so when you’re running as an independent. But that’s what Cecil Bothwell decided to do in North Carolina. The Asheville City Council member wanted to take on “Blue Dog” (conservative) Democrat Heath Shuler. Bothwell, as you might recall, is an out atheist. That fact was used against him by his opponents when he ran for city council. They also said he couldn’t hold office if he didn’t believe in… Read more

You would think this wouldn’t be controversial, but no doubt you’re still going to hear pushback against the very idea that godless people would ever risk their lives for a cause greater than themselves. Anyway, AronRa created this awesome promo for it: There aren’t many things that could rival the Reason Rally in terms of its significance in our movement, but I’d argue this… Read more

Richard Wade here. I just got back from my trip to attend the Reason Rally and the American Atheists National Convention. Someone who knows that I’m an atheist was curious about what the speakers said, and their very first question was, “Were they arrogant?” Arrogant. Of the several tens of thousands of adjectives in the English language, I was being asked, yet again, about this one adjective that some atheists have earned once in a while, but which is far… Read more
The Auraria Campus Atheists are putting together a Pseudoscience Fair. Instead of displays featuring volcanos and plants, participants will exhibit various forms of flim flam, explain why they are wrong, and show judges how to prevent getting scammed. It’s an excellent way to promote critical thinking. The icing on the cake? The event will be judged by James Randi 🙂 The event takes place at the St. Cajetan Church (yep) on Monday, April 2nd and it’s free to the public…. Read more
