The Oatmeal has posted a follow-up to his last cartoon about atheism: No wonder people hate math so much… (via Atheist in a Mitten) Read more
Considering how many Christians looooooove to point out that April Fools Day is an atheists’ holiday — They believe in reason and logic and science?! Fools… — I suppose it makes sense to hold the Reason Rally and Rock Beyond Belief events so close to it… Read more
Madalyn Murray O’Hair, the controversial founder of American Atheists, was murdered in 1995 along with her son Jon and her granddaughter Robin. Their remains were eventually found and buried — but there was no gravestone to mark the location. In fact, we still don’t know where their remains are. (Maybe it’s for the best, since there are many theists who would want to desecrate that site.) Last year, Joe Zamecki helped raise $500 to purchase a memorial brick for them… Read more
The downside: The downpour we had early in the day kept a lot of people away from Rock Beyond Belief. We had hoped for a crowd numbering in the thousands. The upside: Several hundred people stayed or arrived later and the entire event went off beautifully 🙂 Justin Griffith and his team put together a great event for military atheists and supporters in the area. The biggest draw, as usual, was Richard Dawkins. Here’s a portion of his speech: The… Read more
Remember that article by Christina Feist-Heilmeier about how there were no atheist nurses? You all tore that article to shreds rather easily…. Now, the same website has published a rebuttal by Air Force Captain Howard Grantham. This one actually gets it right: The second advantage of atheism has afforded me is that it places responsibility for the welfare of humanity in the hands of the only force capable of providing for that welfare: humanity itself. Over at Answers in Genesis, Ken Ham asked fellow Creationist Steve Golden to review a book promoting, among other things, the idea that evolution is real but God has a hand in the process. Of course, this is all blasphemy to them because Christians who buy into theistic evolution are obviously the wrong kinds of Christians: While we at Answers in Genesis acknowledge that one’s view on the origin of man is not a salvation issue, we do say that… Read more
In a New Yorker review of T. M. Luhrmann’s “When God Talks Back: Understanding the American Evangelical Relationship with God,” Joan Acocella points out how desperate members of the Vineyard church are to point out their relationship with god… and how every meaningless action seems to be a sign from him: This casualness carries over to conversations with God. The Vineyarders asked him “for admission to specific colleges, for the healing of specific illness — even, it is true, for… Read more
In Plainfield, New Jersey, mayor Sharon Robinson-Briggs is having a “feud” with city council member Rebecca Williams: What is Williams doing that’s such a travesty to the city? First off, councilwoman at-large Rebecca Williams “grunts” during meetings, says Mayor Sharon Robinson-Briggs and even worse, the mayor says, Williams doesn’t salute the American flag. But she didn’t stop there. Robinson-Briggs repeated her comments, first made in a public meeting, to the local newspaper and, upping the ante, added that some local… Read more
