ChooseDoubt says he got fired because of his atheist views. His details are vague (he says he can’t go into detail for legal reasons), but if the story is true the way it’s described, it would be awful. And so very illegal. I recently lost my job. I was forced out – fired – ostensibly for disagreeing with my boss over the subject of faith. He felt, as a catholic, it was absolutely fine for him to express a sincere… Read more
Publishers Weekly has an article discussing how books about atheism are in vogue. There’s nothing you haven’t heard before in the article, but I did think it was interesting to see how all these books have been selling. The numbers aren’t exact (they’re lower than the actual amounts), but they give you a good estimate of the relative successes of the various books: The God Delusion by Richard Dawkins: 282,000 copies sold The End of Faith by Sam Harris: 250,000… Read more
***UPDATE: Phil’s my friend now! Yay!*** I got an email the other day that said I have a new Facebook friend. But it wasn’t a random person… it was Phil Plait, the excellent blogger at Bad Astronomy! This was very exciting. As far as science bloggers go, Phil’s at the top of the pack. He even included a short message saying hello and that we had met at The Amaz!ng Meeting. That was true– I met him earlier this year…. Read more
I’m testing out Google AdSense. If you subscribe to my RSS feed, this shouldn’t be an issue. If you don’t, it just requires some minor scrolling to get to the latest posting. Thanks for bearing with me. Any suggestions as to how to make it better or more useful (for me, anyway) would be helpful. I know not what I do. Read more
I think I’m on Shirley Phelps-Roper’s side for once… kind of. Shirley is the daughter of Fred Phelps, whose entire family is known for protesting military funerals because God is punishing our country for “harboring gays and lesbians” (and apparently, the two ideas are connected). The family’s church’s website is GodHatesFags.com. It’s very easy to despise them. Just like on Tuesday, when they were protesting the funeral of Nebraska Army National Guard Spc. William “Bill” Bailey. He was killed in… Read more
Greydon Square’s new album, The Compton Effect, is out! You know you want it! He’s a fantastic rapper whose lyrics have an atheist bent to them. For example, from Pandora’s Box: Don’t hate me cause im atheist… Hate me cause I tell the truth which by default makes me atheist You’ve been spoon fed belief and you don’t even see it You just absorbed the religion that’s native to your region You can’t believe it so you won’t believe it… Read more

Maria, a liberal Catholic commenter on this site, had a few questions she wanted to pose to readers: Recently, several books have been written about atheism. The three main authors that we have heard about most have been Richard Dawkins, Sam Harris, and Christopher Hitchens. What is everyone’s opinion on each of these authors? What do you like/dislike about them, what they have said, and their books? Do you feel their tones are too strident or not forceful enough, and… Read more
During the first Republican presidential debate, Sam Brownback, Tom Tancredo, and Mike Huckabee all said they did not believe in evolution. Brownback later displayed further ignorance about evolution when writing a pathetic op-ed for the New York Times. So perhaps you thought those candidates learned their lesson before last night’s Republican debate? Not so much. This time, it was Mike Huckabee who showed us why we should ignore things that come out of his mouth. “In the beginning, God created… Read more
Senator Jim DeMint is introducing legislation to “Make June 6th [the] National Day of Prayer for the US Armed Forces and Their Mission.” If the resolution passes, President Franklin Roosevelt’s D-Day radio prayer would be “read aloud in Congress each June 6th.” Some portions of the resolution sound like something you’d hear in church: WHEREAS, public prayer and national days of prayer are a long-standing American tradition to bolster national resolve and summon the national will for victory … WHEREAS,… Read more
