Last week, Maria, a self-described “31 year old, married, Christian, homeschooling mom of a 12 year old and a 2 year old” offered to answer questions about her conservative, the-Bible-is-literally-true beliefs. A lot of questions were submitted and I picked a number of them for Maria to answer. Her responses are below. While everyone is welcome to respond back, keep in mind that it’s not an easy decision to voluntarily throw yourself to the wolves 🙂 So as you comment,… Read more
Well, I’ll preface this by saying it happened in Iowa… either that, or Kansas is just getting larger. A professor at Southwestern Community College in Iowa — community college, not a Bible college — has been fired because he essentially put Christianity on par with other religions and implied that they should not take the Biblical book of Genesis literally: “I put the Hebrew religion on the same plane as any other religion. Their god wasn’t given any more credibility… Read more

Mary Jo Knelly and David Huggins-Daines have their wedding next Saturday, September 29th. They requested a marriage license last month. Specifically, they wanted to be married without an officiant (i.e. a priest). Their request was denied by Timothy W. Finnerty, the Allegheny County (Pennsylvania) Register of Wills Solicitor. … According to Pennsylvania law, Finnerty wrote, “There is no provision for the individuals to officiate at their own marriage.” … Finnerty told the couple that only those of the Quaker and… Read more
Perhaps in response to Rob Sherman’s atheist activism or his daughter’s recent (successful) campaign to get God Bless America off of the Homecoming Dance song list at her high school, the family evoked a response from the suburban Chicago community. Their home was vandalized Friday night: … with eggs tossed at the house and cars, and crosses and religious words scrawled in chalk on the driveway. A church bulletin also was stuck on the front door. The police department thinks… Read more
California congressman Pete Stark spoke at Harvard a couple nights ago, his first remarks about his non-belief since the Secular Coalition for America’s contest. He received the Humanist of the Year award from Harvard’s humanist chaplaincy: In the picture, Stark (right) shakes the hand of SCA’s president, Herb Silverman. The Boston Globe has a summary article of the event, where Stark made a number of remarks saying that religion on the Hill was more politics than faith (shocking, I know)…. Read more
Everyone go say hello to Kyle, The Happy New Atheist! I just want to say how grateful am to all of those people in the world who have made this possible for me and the many others who have come to this conclusion about life: that it is miraculous, astonishing, profoundly beautiful, and entirely, wonderfully god-free. Life is suddenly worth living simply for what it is. [tags]atheist, atheism[/tags] Read more

I’ll be gone tomorrow, but if anyone sees the link to the video, please post it in the comments! ***Update***: I *so*… Read more
