Don’t you get really annoyed when people preach at you about their faith on campus? One group managed to avoid the pitfalls of campus proselytization and received a lot of positive feedback from the people who came their way. (Pictured above, L-R: Reese Allen, Jesus, Xianhang Zhang) It was Pastafarian Awareness Day today at the University of Washington in Seattle! The Secular Student Union was promoting their upcoming meeting, where they will be discussing the topic, “Is religion more plausible… Read more
Last week, I asked this question: What is the scariest Halloween costume an atheist could wear? Here are the Top 5 answers (with submitters)! 5| Pat Robertson (Shalini) 4| President Pat Robertson (Philosopher Jeff) 3| Four Ann Coulters side by side (Diane) 2| Dinesh D’Souza, with a pile of his own books to sign (MorseCode) 1| Jesus with a ball gag and a spiked dog collar being lead on a leash by a woman in a burka (Vovic) I am… Read more
First of all, it’s PZ Myers. With an “s” at the end. It’s not that difficult. Scott Adams, creator of Dilbert, answered readers’ questions on the Freakonomics blog. Here are a couple of the exchanges: Q: I’m interested in your comments on evolution. If you have read PZ Myer’s deconstruction of your opinions on evolution, I think they point out not only your misconceptions, but also those of a large number of people unfamiliar with theory. A: Actually, PZ Myer… Read more
I know, I know. No one likes the annoying Facebook applications. It’s no longer cute to get bitten by a zombie. But here’s one that will delight some atheists. You can put the Scarlet A from Richard Dawkins’ OUT campaign on your Facebook page! It’s pretty simple. It’s not annoying or obtrusive. The image just shows up on your page, and it links to the OUT campaign home page. Unlike other apps, this one doesn’t force itself onto your friends,… Read more
While we’re on the subject of what atheists look like, Kate sends along this image (via LivelyIvy): That is *so* you. [tags]atheist, atheism, roommate[/tags] Read more
A Sunday School teacher I know has to follow the basic curriculum set by her church. How she presents the material is up to her. Recently, her 3rd and 4th 5th and 6th grade students were told to draw pictures of what people look like when they have Christ versus when they don’t. They were given a blank “gingerbread man” type outline (below) and told to fill it in. Think about that for a moment. How can you tell if… Read more
Apparently, signing the back of your driver’s license isn’t good enough anymore. You need to be listed in the state’s new organ/tissue donor registry. It takes 30 seconds. Just have your license or state ID number handy. Then, fill out this brief form. If you don’t live in Illinois, click here to find out how you can donate. It would make more sense to me if people had to fill out a form if they didn’t want to donate their… Read more
If you go to this site and wait for Jesus to stop talking, he’ll follow your mouse’s every move. I’ve been mesmerized for several minutes now. And a little freaked out. His head never moves down. He kinda resembles Alice during the Brady Bunch theme song… If that wasn’t enough, when he speaks, you can apparently hear the word “Messiah” in the background. Twice. I’m in an airport right now, so I don’t feel comfortable turning up the volume while… Read more
I spent the day at Harding University (A Church of Christ affiliated school) in Searcy, Arkansas and gave a talk to the students/faculty in the evening about my book and atheism in general. Here are some of the highlights: The students gave me a great opportunity to talk about my story on their “home turf,” and they asked fair questions afterwards. It was fun for me. I hope it was fun for them. (On a side note, I wish I… Read more
I’ll be speaking about the book at Harding University (a Christian college) in Searcy, Arkansas (about 50 miles north-east of Little Rock) tonight in the Heritage Building’s Cone Chapel at 7:00 p.m. (local time).
