Recently a remark by a Christian visiting here reminded me of something peculiar I have encountered from time to time that I had never known about before I started reading and discussing things on line, the notion of the “not real Christian.” I have heard several people who identify themselves as Christians say that because other people who identify themselves as Christians do not believe in such and such, or don’t agree with so and so, or haven’t done whatever,… Read more

… by hackers. Bryan Pesta ran a popular atheist/agnostic group on MySpace. At last count, it was over 31,000 members strong. Technically, that made it the largest organized group of atheists/agnostics in the country. However, that group no longer exists. Recently, hackers broke into the group profile and essentially killed it. They renamed it “jesus is love.” The 3000 “friends” of the group are gone. The regular posters on the group’s message board have been banned. Many discussion threads were… Read more
You may have already heard about how the famous atheist philosopher, Antony Flew, converted to deism a few years back. He now has a book out entitled There Is a God: How the World’s Most Notorious Atheist Changed His Mind. Since then both atheists and Christians have reacted in predictable ways. While some Christians crow and flaunt Flew as some kind of trophy, some atheists have suggested that perhaps Flew is going senile in his old age and was simply… Read more
A bit of background on the Religious Freedom Restoration Act (RFRA): [A national version of RFRA] was passed [in 1993] in response to the 1990 case of Employment Division v. Smith, where the U.S. Supreme Court upheld an Oregon law criminalizing the use of peyote even in religious ceremonies. In 1997, however, the U.S. Supreme Court overturned a large part of RFRA, citing the Fourteenth Amendment. The Court stated that Congress overstepped its powers with those portions of RFRA. However,… Read more

When you see only one set of footprints in the sand it was then that I was carrying… Read more

If you missed the Chicago Bears game yesterday, it was awesome. (Oh wait… we’re mostly atheists here. We don’t follow sports.) Short recap: Devin Hester returned a punt and a kickoff back for touchdowns. Bears had a blocked punt near the end of the game and a last-minute touchdown to tie it. They won in overtime on a field goal. Back to Hester for a moment… The Bears have a 5-6 record but they’re still in the hunt for a… Read more
The Creation Museum is “evolving” and getting 663 new parking spaces as part of a $500,000 upgrade. The museum will add 663 parking spaces, outdoor canopies and a maintenance building and will move its main entrance as part of a $500,000 upgrade, according to a report in The Kentucky Enquirer. They’re not adding anything science-related, of course… there’s no room for any of that heresy in the building. [tags]atheist, atheism[/tags] Read more
