Ok, so the Sexiest Atheist Blogger voting was just for fun. Even though I’m currently losing the vote to PZ by only a handful of votes. (I demand a recount.) But I could actually use your help for something more serious. And possibly more entertaining. Outreach Magazine is a Christian publication. They published a really thorough interview with me when my book came out. Now, they’re running their annual “OUTREACH Resource Awards.” This year the editors of OUTREACH gathered hundreds… Read more
The word “secular” has become synonymous with “atheist” in recent years. There is a difference, though. In a recent Newsweek column, Lisa Miller writes this: Like the words “feminist” and “liberal,” “secular” and its derivatives have come to mean extreme versions of themselves. They are code in conservative Christian circles for “atheist” or even “God hating”—they conjure, in a fresh way, all the demons Christian conservatives have been fighting for more than 30 years: liberalism, sexual permissiveness and moral lassitude…. Relevant Church in Tampa, Florida wants you to have great sex. Unless you’re single. Then you’re living in sin. Stop that. What does the church want you to do? People are not having enough sex. An epidemic of breakups prove the needs that lead to a great sex life are being overlooked. Dirty dishes, frumpy clothes, and a lack of authentic connections are killing the romance. A great sex life is a challenge and takes focus, determination, and planning. Some… Read more
Here’s your chance. The application for the 2008-2009 Skepchick/Skepdude Calendars is up! Deadline to apply is March 14th. In case you’re wondering, this isn’t a *total* nudie calendar… We’re not after overt nudity, but rather titillatingly and tastefully used. We are after the skeptical/science/nerd/geek angle, and those photos that use both will have an advantage. Because the 2008 calendar was pushed back, this calendar is (I think) an 18-month edition beginning in the summer and going through 2009. That’s just… Read more
Jessica Hagy is the creator of Indexed, the webcomic that is thought-provoking, brilliant, and so deceptively simple that you wonder why you didn’t think of it first. Until you realize Jessica has a unique mind that is difficult to imitate. Her creations are not always about religion, but her notecard canvases includes these personal favorites of mine: Jessica’s book, also titled Indexed, will be coming out on February 28th. She was kind enough to answer my questions about her creative… Read more
If I don’t win this poll by a landslide, we are *so* not friends anymore. It’s the one chance I’ll ever have in life of beating PZ at anything. Plus, I should get bonus points for being in the upcoming Skepdudes Calendar (link is to last year’s models). Say it with me now: “Yes, we can!” And next time, let’s include a much wider array of sexy atheist bloggers. Dare I ask: Any nominations…? (via Letters from a Broad) [tags]atheist,… Read more

Below is a video-review by Ben “Yahtzee” Croshaw of The Escapist’s popular Zero Punctuation column regarding “God Games,” games where you can (for example) design entire societies. He doesn’t seem to like them… Blog reader Andy says this: With games like Spore (by Maxis the creators of Sim City games), evolution guided by god, in this case you, I think it raises questions about how these games affect our views on God. It seems popular now, to describe the platypus… Read more
I help coach the Speech Team at my school. The state finals is this weekend. In the weeks leading up to it, I spend very little time (after school) at my desk and a lot of time at practice. The time I am at my desk (in the morning) is spent working on lesson plans and talking to parents and all other teacher-y things. I’ll be cleaning the desk off next week. But before I do that, I figured I… Read more
This is bigotry on account of ignorance on account of religion: The Kansas State High School Activities Association said referees reported that Michelle Campbell was preparing to officiate at St. Mary’s Academy near Topeka on Feb. 2 when a school official insisted that Campbell could not call the game. The reason given, according to the referees: Campbell, as a woman, could not be put in a position of authority over boys because of the academy’s beliefs. At least some people… Read more
