A few weeks ago, I wrote about a German children’s book which was getting trashed by the country’s religious groups. Now, you can read the book for yourself. An English translation is being offered for free. Check the book out and see what you think. [tags]atheist, atheism[/tags] Read more

Today’s edition of The New York Times features a positive story about an atheist lobbyist. Not Lori Lipman Brown of the Secular Coalition for America, who lobbies on Capitol Hill. This story follows Jennifer Lange, a New York state lobbyist who works with the Institute for Humanist Studies, as she goes through her workday in the state capital. Ms. Lange’s mission on this Monday in early February was to scuttle a bill titled the Religious Freedom Restoration Act, which she… Read more
It’s amazing how little I knew about atheists until now. Join me in getting educated! 1. South Australia was the first place to allow atheists to stand for parliament. 2. Lightning strikes atheists over seven times every hour! 3. Reindeer like to eat atheists. 4. Atheists are often used in place of milk in food photography, because milk goes soggy more quickly than atheists. 5. Atheists cannot be detected by infrared cameras! 6. Atheists can sleep with one eye open!… Read more
The Port Huron City Council (Michigan) used to have a pre-meeting prayer that anyone could lead. The fact that they had a prayer to lead off meetings is itself a problem… but it’s not the issue at hand. Khalil “Casey” Chaudry, a member of the City Council, is an atheist. He wanted to lead one of the invocations… and he was denied. Why? Mayor Brian Moeller previously had denied Chaudry’s request to lead the prayer because, according to Moeller, Chaudry… Read more
Kristine’s posting about the cocky young atheists in her science class gets me wondering: Who was the first atheist you ever met? I don’t even remember at this point. I didn’t meet any growing up, to be sure. A good friend in 8th grade was agnostic. We didn’t talk about it much. That was the closest I got. I became an atheist on my own a year later. Only then did I began meeting other ones… but I’m hard-pressed to… Read more
A letter to atheist advice-giver Molleen Matsumura in her Sweet Reason column reads like this: I’m a student in a teacher certification program in Texas, and I’m pretty nervous about how my atheism is going to play out as an elementary school teacher . So many of the other students in my program at the Univ. of Texas at Dallas are such fervent evangelicals, that I often feel suffocated and angry at their ignorance. It is apparent that they’ll sidestep… Read more
Mahatma Gandhi once said this: “I like your Christ, I do not like your Christians. Your Christians are so unlike your Christ.” Ray Comfort tries to respond. You know where this is going…: First, no one is like Jesus Christ. He was sinless. If you think you can be like Him, try living like Him for one day… Not that Gandhi ever said that he himself was like Christ. But Ray doesn’t let that minor point get in the way… Read more
