Not that Frosty the Snowman is Christian, but atheists could always use a Christmas character of our own. Travis Morgan presents Gusty the Invisible Sky Daddy: Gusty the invisible sky daddy is real they say, He was made by men that teach young children to believe without proof and pray. There must have been some magic in that old primitive book they found. For when they read it they started to spread rumors dogmatic and quite unsound. O, Gusty the… Read more
Pasta. And lots of it. That is some awesome artwork created by Dhreck: Dhreck writes: In total 7 different kinds of pasta were used to create the finished piece. Spaghetti for the outlines, tagliatelle to fill in His noodly appendages, a bit of vermicelli on the eye-stalks, green & orange fusilli for His meaty balls and glass noodle on the eyeballs. Background is filled in with broken down lasagna Verde sheets on the bottom and ground up Chinese egg noodle… Read more
The short version of the story: A man drove over 100 mph and rammed into the back of a woman’s car because he thought God wanted him to “take the other car off the road.” Thankfully, both drivers are ok. There was another aspect to the story that really caught my attention, though. There are two mentions of God in the article. In one, God is non-existent and malicious, and because the driver believed in Him, he is undergoing psychiatric… Read more
In a move that sounds much more controversial than it really is, Planned Parenthood of Indiana is selling gift certificates in $25 increments. Planned Parenthood of Illinois will be offering something similar beginning on Monday. They cover a wide spectrum of health problems: The gift certificates can be given to women and men to cover essential services like screenings and birth control. Services such as annual exams for women, which include breast exams and Pap tests, typically cost $58. The… Read more
Last night, I received an email from a high school student named Cris. I think it perfectly illustrates why the atheist bus campaigns and the atheist billboards are so important: I’m a 16-year-old atheist who lives in the D.C. suburbs and goes to a Catholic school in D.C. Because you’ve been posting about the D.C. atheist bus campaign, I thought I’d share this story with you. I was taking the Metro bus to school this morning when I had an… Read more
Atheist Ireland, an advocacy group for, um, atheists in Ireland is set to launch in the next few weeks under the chairmanship of Michael Nugent, a writer from Dublin. Our mission to provide a platform for people who wish to work together to build a rational, ethical and secular society free from superstition and supernaturalism. We have two aims. One, to promote atheism and reason over superstition and supernaturalism. And two, to promote an ethical and secular Ireland where the… Read more
There’s something about this article on the process of making communion wafers that makes me take Catholic doctrine even less seriously than before: The [Cavanagh Altar Bread] company sells its wafers to religious supply retail stores and convents, which are ramping up Christmas orders. Sister Mary Michael of the Corpus Christi Monastery in the Bronx, N.Y., said her monastery, like many, used to bake altar bread for sale to surrounding churches as a source of income. But demand outstripped what… Read more
Shocker: Bill O’Reilly is pissed off that atheists had the gall to include themselves in a winter display at the state capitol building in Olympia, Washington. Atheists have just as much right to include themselves in a holiday display as any other religious group. The government cannot endorse any particular faith, so everyone gets a fair shot at expressing their beliefs. I do question how effective the Freedom From Religion Foundation’s sign is — will it really get any religious… Read more
A few atheists from Minnesota are taking part in the 3rd Annual Santa Run to benefit Mid Minnesota Legal Assistance this Saturday. The money raised goes to benefit low income and disabled Minnesotans’ access to civil law assistance. You can help them out by donating here. Do you know other atheists banding together to raise money for charity this winter? (via Minnesota Atheists) Read more
The Secular Coalition for America has put out its annual year-end report. It’s a useful overview in case anyone asks what sorts of issues non-religious care to lobby about — notice that all of them are not specific to atheists. They ought to be supported by anyone who believes in a separation of church and state; in fact, the SCA works closely with religious groups on behalf of these issues and others like them. Here is a partial list of… Read more
