Dan Barker, co-president of the Freedom From Religion Foundation, will be speaking to college and local groups in the Washington, D.C. and Virginia area next week! He’ll be speaking about his book Godless: How an Evangelical Preacher Became One of America’s Leading Atheists, why we need separation of church and state, and religious displays on public property (it was FFRF that put the atheist plaque in the Olympia, Washington Capitol building). If you’ve never heard him speak, he’s fantastic. Bring… Read more
Kevin Trudeau, author of the full-of-bullshit book Natural Cures “They” Don’t Want You To Know About, has been ordered to pay a $37,000,000+ fine for writing lies. Urged by both the FTC and Trudeau to reconsider aspects of its August order, on November 4 Judge Gettleman amended the judgment to $37,616,161, the amount consumers paid in response to the deceptive infomercials. The judge also revised the three-year ban to prohibit Trudeau from “disseminating or assisting others in disseminating” any infomercial… Read more
I’m not going to pretend like I know anything about Bolivia’s political scene. But this story caught my attention for obvious reasons: A television ad that has aired around the country opens with a photo of Bolivia’s leftist President Evo Morales dressed in the garb of a traditional shaman. An image of Jesus Christ arrives to knock Mr. Morales off the screen, and a document labeled “New Constitution” appears amid flames. “Choose God. Vote No,” the ad advises. The ad,… Read more

Conservative Christians can’t deal with the notion that more colleges are now allowing co-ed dorm rooms: Bryan Fischer of the Idaho Values Alliance says the exposure of a co-ed housing plan is touching nerves. … “[B]ecause a 20- or 21-year-old female student can contract sexually transmitted disease[s] or get pregnant just as easily as an 18- or 19-year-old student,” he says. “And we just think that a taxpayer-funded institution like the University of Idaho simply should not be in the… Read more
It doesn’t take a whole lot to represent yourself well when you’re an atheist being interviewed on television. Just follow a few basic rules: Don’t be unnecessarily contentious. Know your stuff. Smile. Need an example? I just saw a high school student model it beautifully. Dawn Sherman was on a local television talk show talking about her role in getting the mandatory moment of silence banned from Illinois public schools. To see the clip, go here and under the video… Read more

Randy Pratt and his wife Melissa Pratt were supposed to receive a $1,772.50 deposit in their bank account. Apparently, the bank was running low on decimals and the couple received a deposit of $177,250 instead. They didn’t tell anyone about this. They simply “withdrew the money, quit their jobs and moved to Florida.” Now, they’re on trial. What was he thinking, you might ask? Easy: He said he considered the money “a gift from God.” Of course he did… I… Read more
