Vermont down. 46 to go. Fantastic. The fact that it was the democratically-elected legislature that made this happen is even better. I hope the domino effect will continue. I won’t try to add to the wonderful things others have already said about this. However, I was curious what the conservative Christian reaction would be to this. For once, this was a legislative victory, not an “activist judge” or two. Would they accept this? Of course not. Here are my favorite… Read more
The U.S. Army’s Chief of Chaplains, Maj. Gen. Douglas L. Carver, has decided to proclaim today a “Day of Prayer and Fasting” (PDF) Whereas the Chaplaincy, as spiritual leaders, model faith and belief in the Hand of God to intervene in the course of history and individual lives; I therefore call the Chaplaincy to a Day of Prayer and Fasting… It’s not just that an army representative of all faiths and no faith is calling today a Day of Prayer… Read more
I’ve been reading Kathryn Joyce’s Quiverfull and several passages scare the living $#!& out of me. Like this one, describing a woman who wants to keep knocking out those Christian babies: Nancy Campbell is far more explicit in speculating about the implications of the natalist theology she teaches. When godly people stop having children, we are wasting the godly seed. So today, we are facing a very, very serious threat: the threat of Islam. They are outnumbering us seven to… Read more
Ray Comfort is best known for embarrassing himself with his infamous “bananas are the atheists’ worst nightmare” video. He actually makes another similar argument against evolution using a Coke can. Just watch it here. It’s fantastic: Now, Comfort is pesudo-apologizing for the banana video, saying atheists took it completely out of context. But in an effort to redeem himself, he sounds even more ignorant than before: A bit of the transcript: “Bananaman” is a reference to an illustration presented by… Read more
I posted before about my non-debate with a Christian pastor. (Jay Gamelin and I took questions from the audience — via moderators — and talked about faith and atheism and politics and stereotypes and all things entertaining.) A longer video of the event is now available. It’s broken up into two parts but you can see the entire thing below: (Thanks to Ashley for the videos!) Read more
Once, there was a hilarious website called Fundies Say the Darndest Things! which chronicled embarrassing quotations said by Fundamentalist Christians in chat rooms, blog comment threads, and their own websites. On March 1st, the website went into “read only” mode unable to be updated. It’s been a good run, but the FSTDT archive is going into readonly-mode effective Mar 1, 2009. Thank you everyone who has contributed to the archive over the years 🙂 Was FSTDT coming to an end?… Read more
This is just a perfect example of how the Religious Right distorts the facts to suit their own needs. On April 17th, students who choose to will participate in the Day of Silence: The Day of Silence… is a student-led day of action when concerned students, from middle school to college, take some form of a vow of silence to bring attention to the name-calling, bullying and harassment — in effect, the silencing — experienced by LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual… Read more
***Update***: joethehappyheretic says that this is satire and he has proof of it … This must be the Christians’ new method of getting women to remain abstinent. Forever… I dare you to watch it with a straight face… Especially when the orange gives birth: (via The Invisible Pink Unicorn — where more of this guy’s videos can be found…) Read more
Roger Scruton of The American Spectator says his atheist parents would have been appalled by the “New Humanism”: But the vision is not that of my parents. The new humanism spends little time exalting man as an ideal. It says nothing, or next to nothing, about faith, hope, and charity; is scathing about patriotism; and is dismissive of those rearguard actions in defense of the family, public spirit, and sexual restraint that animated my parents. Instead of idealizing man, the… Read more
