This video from Eric Hovind (Kent Hovind’s son) encapsulates every Creationist argument in a nutshell. If you can’t think of the answer, God did it. Their ignorance is proof of God’s work. How to destroy their argument in a word? Wikipedia. You know, if you have a full minute, it might be useful to take five seconds and do a quick Google search. (Thanks to Sean for the link!) Read more
Zack Ford wrote up a list of common arguments he hears his Christian friends making in favor of a god and why they don’t work. He’s found that their arguments fall into a handful of categories or memes: “It’s true because I believe it.” — The “Truth” Meme “These are my beliefs, so you need to respect them.” — The “Respect” Meme “If my beliefs are not being respected, I’m the victim.” — The “Victim” Meme “Atheists are ego-worshippers/self-centered/selfish/etc.“ –… Read more
This post is by Jesse Galef, who works for the American Humanist Association … These stories always make me sad. Via Daniel Florien at Unreasonable Faith I found an article on fake faith-healer Todd Bentley. WORLD Magazine (Today’s News | Christian Views) asked him for a list of the people he had healed and – after six weeks and a dozen requests – were given a list of 13 names. The problem? Two of the people Bentley listed as ‘healed’… Read more
Reader Stephan recently came across an old album of his by Ben Harper called Fight For Your Mind. When looking at the tracks on the CD, he noticed that one of the songs, “Power of the Gospel,” was one he still really liked: I had forgotten how much I enjoyed that song from my old Harper years… I find it to be very powerful even now as an atheist. (Powerful in the sense that I still get chills whilst listening… Read more

Responses to Charlotte Allen’s embarrassing diatribe against atheists have been posted throughout the blogosphere. This is the initial response from the Los Angeles Times, courtesy of Paul Thornton, a researcher for their editorial page: You couldn’t say we didn’t see this coming: Charlotte Allen’s May 17 Op-Ed article on her dislike of outspoken atheists (think Sam Harris and Richard Dawkins, pictured to the right in that order) has gone viral, sitting at No. 4 on list of most e-mailed latimes.com… Read more
Here’s a very positive article by Yonat Shimron of The News & Observer in Raleigh, NC about atheist parents gathering together each week to share wisdom and ideas on how to raise children. These parents know what it’s like to fumble for the right answer to questions such as “Why don’t we go to church?” and “Is God real?” and they want to share their responses with like-minded parents. For example, when 6-year-old Evan Spiering announced one day that “God… Read more
I love when groups of intelligent people can get together in support of a fellow skeptic. Simon Singh spoke to 200-300 supporters about the chiropractic libel case today. To summarize, Singh criticized the methods of chiropractics in a newspaper article last year but a judge recently claimed that he was attacking the practitioners of it (not true) and thus Singh lost his preliminary hearing. He is now thinking about filing an appeal. Paul Sims was in the crowd at Penderel’s… Read more
There was craziness last week when Transpo, a company that controls which ads are placed on buses in South Bend, decided to delay atheist advertising on their buses. It looked a little something like this: Even though the money had been paid, the atheists couldn’t capitalize on Barack Obama’s weekend appearance at Notre Dame and all the eyeballs that were on the city. Today, the Transpo board met and made the right decision: The atheist ads will finally be given… Read more
This is *perfect* for atheist math teachers like myself: Of course we should believe in angles. But only the Right ones. My Guardian Angle helped me quite a bit when I took the SATs. The image was created by Kristine Hoppenworth, a student freethought leader from Florida. You can purchase it on shirts/hats/buttons/etc. at CafePress. (Thanks to Roy for the link!) Read more
