I hate it when my brain cockblocks the rest of me. I meet someone really interesting. Then she does something I’m sure normal people never care about (e.g. misspelling an easy word), and my brain tells me never to have children with them. My brain and I are currently in battle over picky things like this. Anyway, Debbie experienced something similar when she met a couple new friends at a social gathering. The three women were all talking and one… Read more
***Update***: Dave Fitzgerald, the co-founder of this festival, posted an important comment regarding the date of this festival. Check it out. … I’m excited and happy. Excited because there’s an Atheist Film Festival taking place in San Francisco next month! They’re not all original movies; just movies that atheists would enjoy. I’m also happy that it looks to be well-organized and no one decided to alter the logo and change it to the following: Information on which movies will be… Read more
There are atheist bus ads currently running in Ottawa, Canada stating: “There’s probably no God, now stop worrying and enjoy your life.” Writing a letter in the Ottawa Citizen, 13-year-old Mallory Skinner can’t understand why anyone would want to publicly say such things: Atheists don’t believe in any sort of God, and don’t follow any religion. I don’t have a problem with atheists, though I am Protestant, and I do believe God exists in some shape or form. I believe… Read more
This post is by Jesse Galef, who works for the American Humanist Association … Ladies and gentlemen, for your daily dose of stupid, I give you Rep. Joe Barton (R-TX) quotes explaining why he doesn’t want to do anything about greenhouse gasses (via Thinkprogress): “I would also point out that CO2, carbon dioxide, is not a pollutant in any normal definition of the term. It’s not hazardous to health, it’s naturally occurring. I am creating it as I talk… Read more
A few days ago, we heard about how the Frisco Independent School District in Texas allowed Gideon volunteers to distribute Bibles to schoolchildren. They don’t preach to them, but they do put out their materials… just in case students happen to walk by… Frequent commenter on this site TXatheist wrote to a district rep and asked her if atheists could get equal time: Ms. Wortham, As a concerned parent I would like to know how we go about getting equal… Read more
Daniel Hauser’s mother has fled the scene with him — more evidence that she can’t be trusted to make responsible decisions. Colleen Hauser had already brainwashed her son into thinking his Hodgkin’s lymphoma can be cured by “natural remedies” instead of chemotherapy. She had a court date scheduled yesterday, but she was nowhere to be found: … only Daniel’s father appeared. He told [Brown County District Judge John] Rodenberg he last saw his wife Monday evening. “She said she was… Read more
I haven’t been watching American Idol this season, which I think puts me in another minority group. But with the finale coming up tonight, it’s interesting to point out that the two people in the finals are a gay rocker (Adam Lambert) and an Evangelical Christian worship leader (Kris Allen). They get along amazingly well in interviews and press conferences, and there’s no sense of any tension (other than from sheer competition). According to host Ryan Seacrest, 88,000,000 votes were… Read more
The Greatest Show on Earth: The Evidence for Evolution is Richard Dawkin’s next book — it’s scheduled to be released on September 29th. I’ve said this before, but I grew to love Dawkins’ writing after I read The Ancestor’s Tale, not The God Delusion. He has a way of communicating scientific ideas that is second to none. Plus, for the $3,500,000 Free Press (the publisher) is paying for the book, it better be good 🙂 The initial title was Only… Read more
I wonder how many pastors find themselves in these shoes… … and how many of them choose to stay in the pulpit despite their doubts? (via nakedpastor) Read more
