When religious fundies go after a YouTube video about science/religion by downvoting it or “flagging” it, the website has done a dismal job of letting the video stay up. That means it’s remarkably easy to get a video taken down for no reason other than it’s offensive to some religious person. It’s pathetic and YouTube needs to address the issue. AndromedasWake has a video up explaining the problem and how you can help: If you have a spare minute and… Read more

I enjoy reading David Hayward’s blog because he’s constantly critical of the church and Christian faith he loves. He explains the 10 challenges of religious communities — problems that drive people away from the faith, problems which he is trying to fix in his own church community. I wonder how many of them you’ve experienced and if any one or two of them specifically made you walk away from your faith. Here are just a couple items from David’s list:… Read more

A few months ago, a new law passed in Ireland that makes blasphemy a crime warranting a fine of €25,000. Atheist Ireland wants to get it repealed and they’re doing it by challenging the law starting on Day 1. We believe in the golden rule: that we have a right to be treated justly, and that we have a responsibility to treat other people justly. Blasphemy laws are unjust: they silence people in order to protect ideas. In a civilised… Read more

A couple days ago, I mentioned the story of Lisa Miller and Janet Jenkins. In short, they were a lesbian couple joined under a civil union. Miller gave birth via artificial insemination. Later, they separated and Miller became an evangelical Christian. Miller soon denounced homosexuality and didn’t want to allow Jenkins access to their child… which was illegal since Jenkins did have “liberal visitation rights.” A judge ruled that Jenkins should be awarded custody of the child (with visitation rights… Read more
We’ve seen a list with the men. Now, Jen offers a list of the women (along with a poll): I’ve seen various end of the year polls floating around concerning atheism, but they seem to miss a huge part of the atheist movement: the ladies! So here’s a poll focusing just on the female voices of atheism. Who do you think was the most influential female atheist of 2009? That’s an awesome list — though it’s missing some excellent YouTubers… Read more
