Most Influential Female Atheist of 2009? January 1, 2010

Most Influential Female Atheist of 2009?

We’ve seen a list with the men.

Now, Jen offers a list of the women (along with a poll):

I’ve seen various end of the year polls floating around concerning atheism, but they seem to miss a huge part of the atheist movement: the ladies! So here’s a poll focusing just on the female voices of atheism. Who do you think was the most influential female atheist of 2009?

That’s an awesome list — though it’s missing some excellent YouTubers (Laci Green and ZOMGitsCriss come to mind).

I think PZ could still find a way to win, though 🙂

  • How’s about the Skepchick crew, except that dude, Valarie Tarico, and whether you believe in the historicy of Jesus or not, Archarya S-constantly pointing out the evils of bad religion. BH’s list is much better than mine.

Do I have to pick just one?

Wait! I don’t have to pick just one! Whew. There’s just way too much awesomeness there to pick one.

You know I’m a fan of Annie Laurie Gaylor but Eugenie Scott’s a damned good nominee too.

However, I think the award should go to ZOMGitsCriss. I think she’s utterly fantastic. I go periodically to check out her page on my own. Her and Pat Condell are the only two I do.

He might, at that. But do remember, Hemant, you are now down in our books as The Man Who Took On The Pollmaster! Haaaa, small consolation I know. Oh well.

I’ve gone with Ophelia Benson because of her books and her posts on Butterflies and Wheels. She has also consistantly stood up against ‘secular’ nonsense like postmodernism.

  • Bacopa

Amanda Marcotte: Don’t y’all read Pandagon?

  • Angie

YES! I’m so happy to see female nonbelievers getting much-deserved attention! My vote is for Julia Sweeney — I adored “Letting Go of God”.

Still, I’m ill at ease with having Heather MacDonald on the list, given her antifeminist essays.

Ok, i’m going to nitpick because of the specific wording of the question: it’s most influential. So, unfortunately, all of the names on the list that are completely unknown by 98% of population don’t qualify, imo.

That doesn’t mean I don’t think they’re all fabulous and kick-ass (because I do!:), I just don’t think that some of them are exceptionally ‘influential’. Which brings me to who I DO think qualifies in that respect…..

Who’s the hardest working/most ubiquitous ‘big name’ female atheist around these days? Kathy Griffin !

When someone garners as MUCH press and discussion for her atheistic/anti-religion comments as KG does, that’s ‘influential’ 🙂 (of course, one could argue that there’s a difference between ‘good’ influential and ‘bad’ influential, but that’s nitpicking too:)

Ophelia Benson. Very clever, very witty, and extremely prolific.

  • Edmond

I’ve been an atheist for a long time, but I’m newly discovering the atheist community. The female atheist who’s influenced me the most this past year has been Tracie Harris, easy!

  • PZ will probably nominate his wife just to get his name in.

  • When someone offers an award for most influential, ageing, Nutella-loving, Canadian-living-in-the-bowels-of-the-South, mother of two bi-racial kids, smartass atheist give me a ring won’t you? I’d love to throw myself in for the vote – just make sure there are no grammar clauses, mmmm’k?
