Last week, I mentioned a school district in Illinois where two of the candidates for school board were Creationists. Another district is now trying to prove they’re even crazier. Lake Zurich Unit District 95 (home to Lake Zurich High School), in the far northwest suburbs of Chicago, is having school board elections in April. 4 candidates are running for 3 seats. And all 4 candidates are Creationists. One [candidate], Chris Wallace, went so far as to say creationism is fact… Read more
Earlier this week, I mentioned the story of the evangelical Christian wrestler (Joel Northrup) who refused to fight a girl (Cassy Herkelman) in the state tournament, thus forfeiting his own shot at a state title and taking away her chance at showing everybody what she could do against him in a match. Rick Reilly at ESPN made a comment about it that you tend to only hear on atheist blogs: The Herkelmans — and most of the state of Iowa… Read more
I assume it’s a Poe, but the rhetoric is really no different than what you’d hear a Christian mouthpiece say, so the point is made. One website claims to have a good idea why the recent earthquake in Christchurch, New Zealand occurred: Did the “Snow Gaymes” and Butch Lesbian antics of Gay Ski Week, on God’s New Year, trigger the quake? After the earthquake, there were over 4000 aftershocks — enough to jolt most people into some sober thinking –… Read more
… is non-existent. Jessica Hagy, who always shows us the clever link(s) between various ideas on her blog Indexed via Venn Diagrams and line graphs, goes the simple-but-effective route on this one: Nailed it. Read more
DarkMatter2525 explains how, if you ever need to cure leprosy, you’re better off taking the scientific route 🙂 Reminds me of this classic Doonesbury strip… By the way, if you have seen DarkMatter2525’s videos yet, the first two minutes of this one had me cracking up 🙂 Read more
I’m 28 as of this morning! *Happy dance* If you’d like to celebrate along with me, you can always make a $28 donation to the Secular Student Alliance (250 groups and counting!) or the Foundation Beyond Belief (which just surpassed $100,000 in charitable giving!) I am involved closely with both organizations and I can tell you your money would be going to great causes in either case. Read more
Dale McGowan’s daughter Delaney recently won an Evolution & Art Contest sponsored by Charlie’s Playhouse. Delaney imagined a monkey that got stranded on an island with “hard nuts, quiet predators, and purple bushes and trees.” Here’s what she wrote about how the monkey evolves: “The monkey evolved sharp teeth to crack hard nuts, large ears to hear predators, and purple-polka-dotted skin to blend in with the trees and bushes.” Not a bad way of thinking for a budding young science… Read more
Jess Downey has a wonderfully honest and personal post stressing the importance of Planned Parenthood: When I arrived at Planned Parenthood I felt even worse. I felt so embarrassed, like now everyone would know that I was the bad girl who had unprotected sex. I felt dirty. Slutty. Ashamed. Sex itself wasn’t something that I talked about with just anyone with and now I had to tell some stranger at Planned Parenthood about how I was careless and irresponsible. I… Read more
Dear Richard, The other day, I was trawling the Internet looking for nice music when I came across a singer with a beautiful voice. Her name is Christina Grimmie, and she does mostly covers of other people’s songs. I was happily listening to her sing until I saw that she calls herself a “full-on Christian” in her profile and mentions that she sings for Jesus. Now I’m confused: do I listen to her to enjoy good music, or do I… Read more
Reader Brian was in the middle of a mission trip five years ago when he realized he was an atheist. Since he had no other way to tell the people close to him what was really on his mind, he sent them an email. Was it the best way to come out? Who knows. But it’s brutally honest and it gets right to the point — kind of a “take me or leave me” attitude: People I Know: I write… Read more
