Guys, you know that I can be pretty skeptical. You might even go as far as to call me cynical. But seriously… what follows is a miracle that will be discussed for years and generations and centuries to come. You see, Goldfish cracker-enthusiast and Florida native Patti Burke has discovered the next Virgin Mary grilled cheese phenomenon. Behold: the cracker that contains a sign from god: I’ll give you a moment to recover from the awe. [Click headline for rest of story…] Read more
The British magazine New Statesman asked a number of writers (including a couple of notable atheists) what they (and we) could learn from believers. While their answers will make some of you cringe, they really do make a lot of sense — and will appeal to those atheists who are transitioning out of faith but still miss that connection to a church-like community. Singer Lucy Kaplansky just released a video cover of Woody Guthrie’s song “This Morning I Am Born Again.” If you’ve never heard the song before, the lyrics are all about how he’s “born again” without any sense of religion: This morning I was born again and a light shines on my land I no longer look for heaven in your deathly distant land I do not want your pearly gates don’t want your streets of gold This morning I was born again and a light shines on my soul Beautiful song and a great rendition. And it makes no sense, only makes you tense, to be pounding on his door. So don’t go blaming God for your troubles anymore. (Thanks to Allein for the link!) Read more
Bob Englehart of the Hartford Courant drew this cartoon yesterday discussing religion and dark matter: Initially, I laughed. Suck it, religion, right? But the science wasn’t accurate… and Englehart’s description didn’t help the matter: [More…] Read more
Imagine a country that had freedom of religion, but also had a greater than 70% Muslim population. Of course, this ranged from “cover your women from head to toe” Islam to “You don’t really need to pray five times a day, as long as you pray often” Islam, and some groups didn’t see others as truly Muslim, but that’s what freedom of religion is for, right? Imagine that people of no religion were a 16% minority, and Christians were a less than 2% minority. There might have been more Christians, but public sentiment shifted away from them powerfully when a Christian group attacked this country for what they called crimes against Christian nations.
