If you want to have a panel of opinionated women for a TV show like The View, it makes sense to include a couple of conservative Christians like Elisabeth Hasselbeck and Sherri Shepherd to offer a dose of opposition to the liberal Joy Behar and Whoopi Goldberg. Sure, it’s infuriating at times, but it makes for a spirited debate. I didn’t think The View would sink lower after the departure of Hasselbeck. But they’ve now gone from woefully misguided to dangerously ignorant, hiring Jenny McCarthy to replace her: [Click headline for more…] Read more
This is a guest post by Rachael Slick. Note: A few weeks ago, The Daily Show aired a segment about how rough Christians had it because of all those homosexual “bullies”: The heart of the segment involved correspondent Samantha Bee interviewing Matt Slick, founder of the Christian Apologetics and Research Ministry (CARM). Rachael is Matt Slick’s daughter. She’s not a Christian. This is her story. [Click headline for more…] Read more
In my school district, if student get expelled or suspended for an extended period of time, they don’t just stay home and do nothing. We have an “alternative” school they must attend so that they can earn the credits they need to graduate. In Jefferson County, Tennessee, the school district does something similar. But about 10 years ago, the county’s Board of School Commissioners decided they could save money by shutting down their own alternative school and outsourcing the work to Kingswood School, a local non-profit. Just one problem: Kingswood is a Christian school. Kingswood is a non-profit coed residential group care home for children and youth between ages 5 and 18. It provides to displaced children a Christian home-like environment where every effort is made to develop in each child a personal faith in God, in himself, and in his fellowman. The good stuff begins at the 0:52 mark: One YouTube commenter says it best: The moral of the story is, it is better to rob your child of the simple joys of childhood than to disappoint your imaginary friend. (via OnKneesforJesus4) Read more

Grothe When I realized that the title of the talk was “Magicians vs. Psychics” instead of “Magicians vs Physics” (My brain is pretty tired) I was slightly disappointed, and then excited again. Interesting topic, interesting panel, should be an interesting talk. I was right, but I had to wait for a while. I actually wasn’t over at the press table for this, either…. Read more

Diane Benscoter’s tale begins in 1974 as a lost 17-year-old who was concerned about the war in Vietnam and wanted to do something to help stop it. When she was invited to join a peace march, she jumped at the chance. Little did she know she was marching with members of the Unification Church who were using exhaustion, hunger, repetitive lectures, and other brainwashing techniques to get more cult members. By the end of the march, Diane believed the second coming of Christ had occurred, and that it was Sun Myung Moon, and that she had been chosen by God to be his disciple. Last night’s keynote by James Randi was wonderful, the magic show was a blast, I lost spectacularly at poker to a guy who had a pamphlet that said “Texas Hold ‘Em For Beginners” sticking out of his breast pocket and proceeded to hang out at a bar with a magician. So, I guess what I’m saying is: This trip has been pretty awesome. I had my last scheduled interview this morning, so I’ll be able to actually watch some of… Read more
