Sister Cindy, the Slut-Shaming Evangelist, is a TikTok Star on College Campuses

If you’ve attended a large public college anytime in the past few decades, there’s a decent chance you’ve come across “Brother Jed” and “Sister Cindy.” If you haven’t seen them in person, maybe you’ve seen Cindy’s videos on TikTok, where she’s become an unexpected celebrity.

The two evangelists are notorious for screaming about Jesus at students minding their own business while walking on campus. They hold up signs describing everything that’ll send you to Hell. They’re subject to countless acts of defiance and mockery. They’ve also been excellent for membership for campus atheist groups, who use their appearances to fundraise for charity or to make a point a broader point about the problems with religion.

VICE recently spent time with Sister Cindy — a.k.a. the woman who shouts out things like “Be a ho no mo” and “Hell is hot. Don’t be a thot” — to see if there was more to her than the one-dimensional stereotype.

I didn’t realize she had dreams of pursuing journalism before becoming a confrontational evangelist.

Despite her newfound popularity, where students are almost mesmerized by how outdated her beliefs are, there’s an open question about how successful she is. The students in the video are mocking her, not converting. She’s arguably pushed more people away from Jesus, not in His direction. Having social media popularity — and spreading her message — doesn’t necessarily mean people are agreeing with her.

I will fully admit she bothers me a lot less than Christian Nationalist politicians, even if she holds many of the same beliefs. There’s something almost quaint about someone who simply wants to warn people against sin, no matter how absurd the methods. Her views are despicable, but as one students in the video says, you can just ignore her.
