Everyone say hello to Atheist’s Wager, written by a newbie to the blogosphere! In his first post, we read: I have been an atheist since I was twelve years old. Most of my friends are atheists too, so sometimes I forget that most people have a belief in God. I’m not much for political correctness and rarely censor myself, but I don’t go around provoking religious people. There is very little to be gained by arguing with those who have… Read more
If you live in Minnesota, you have no excuse for missing my lecture tomorrow in Roseville at 1:30 p.m. (CST)! Even the Star Tribune newspaper’s Faith & Values section is promoting the event. Glad that settles it. See you all tomorrow! [tags]atheist, atheism, Minnesota, Star Tribune, Faith & Values, Pamela Miller[/tags] Read more
When I was the president of Students WithOut Religious Dogma, the first group for non-religious students at the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC), we wanted to plan a big event during our second year of existence. The biggest atheist in the news at the time was Michael Newdow, right in the heat of his lawsuit to remove “Under God” from the Pledge of Allegiance. I thought it would be amazing to have him speak at our school. I emailed… Read more
Beliefnet’s Executive Editor Elizabeth Sams conducted an exclusive interview with former president Jimmy Carter. According to the article, Carter has taught a Sunday Bible study class at the Maranatha Baptist Church in Plains, Georgia for the past 25 years. There were a couple questions relating to state/church separation and atheism, though, that garnered some interesting responses: Given your life-long involvement with questions of church & state, do you think the current administration has brought too much, or not enough Christianity… Read more

I Sold My Soul on eBay will be released in bookstores everywhere on Tuesday! (Or so I’m told. If I’m wrong, Barbara’s Bookstore is *so* not going to happy with me.) If your local bookstore isn’t carrying it, I suggest staging a hunger strike until a shipment of books arrives. You have my blessings. Some of you have been asking me questions about buying the book so I’ll try to answer them all at once: Where can I buy your… Read more
Kurt Vonnegut was the Honorary President of the American Humanist Association. As the AHA’s notes in their press release on Vonnegut’s passing: “I am a humanist,” [Vonnegut] wrote in a letter to the organization’s members, “which means, in part, that I have tried to behave decently without expectations of rewards or punishments after I am dead.” As always, Vonnegut never lacked humor in his conversations with the AHA: In 2003, when asked permission to quote from something he’d written, Vonnegut… Read more
If you walk on the south side of the University of Illinois at Chicago, near the dorms I lived in one year, you can see Barbara’s Bookstore from a distance. Which is what I did: Then I noticed something in the window… it was at a distance, but I could slightly make out the words: So I had to go up close and check it out: I like that 🙂 Meet author and atheist! It’s like advertising for a book… Read more
The Secular Student Alliance (SSA) is seeking two to three college interns for the summer of 2007. The interns will work at the Humanist Center in Albany, New York. Harold Henderson of the Chicago Reader wrote a terrific article about the book in this week’s issue (pick up your copy on newsstands in Chicago today!). Remember how I said in the previous posting that, judging by her picture, Carol could beat me up? I just saw my picture in this article… I rescind my remarks. *Hemant rolls up sleeves* Bring it on. Some excerpts from the article: Hemant Mehta hasn’t believed in God since he was 14. Richard Dawkins,… Read more
