From the Chicago Tribune: [Rev. Daryl] Bujak, pastor of First Missionary Baptist Church, was initially charged with battery after authorities said he disciplined a 12-year-old girl with a piece of wood, causing welts and bruises. The girl’s mother took her to the pastor for guidance because she did not believe her daughter’s story that she had been abused. There’s more to the story, including how Bujak failed to inform state authorities about the little girl’s molestation claims, which he is… Read more

Here’s a story that gives good background on Pat Robertson’s Regent University law school. It’s from Bill Moyer’s special called “Keeping the Faith.” You can download the video here (WMV). If the name of Regent isn’t familiar, it had been said on their website that since 2001, over 150 graduates of the law school had gone on to work for the Bush administration. And former Attorney General John Ashcroft is now a professor there. As Crooks and Liars points out:… Read more
Everyone say hello to Chai Mama! Her new blog will be a resource for atheist parents: My mission on this blog is not to be the anti religion but to be a positive atheist and post about family, children, charities, community and things that would in general interest the atheist or agnostic parent. It’ll make a nice addition to the atheist parenting blogs already out there, including Dale McGowan’s. [tags]atheist, atheism, Chai Mama, agnostic, Dale McGowan[/tags] Read more

There was much written last week about Karl Rove’s supposed atheism, following an interview that Christopher Hitchens did with New York Magazine to promote his new book God is Not Great. Has anyone in the Bush administration confided in you about being an atheist? Well, I don’t talk that much to them—maybe people think I do. I know something which is known to few but is not a secret. Karl Rove is not a believer, and he doesn’t shout it… Read more
Mike Clawson is a regular commenter on this blog. He wants to see equal rights for gay people, believes in Evolution, strongly advocates the separation of church and state, endorses humanist ideals, and doesn’t think the Bible should always be read literally. All this may be unusual because he is a Christian pastor. Though if you’ve seen what he’s written, you know his remarks are always respectful and knowledgeable. He gives praise to atheists who make good points, while rightfully… Read more
Last night, ABC’s 20/20 aired an episode called “Seeing and Believing: The Power of Faith.” I didn’t get a chance to view it, and the video doesn’t seem to be up on their site yet (***Update*** You can see the segment here), but there is an article up regarding the atheist segment of the program, focusing on the Smalkowski family. Most of the article discusses how Nicole was harassed at school after she didn’t participate in a prayer circle following… Read more
After I posted my list of my Top 5 comedy bits for atheists, there were several comments listing other great comedians that discuss religion in their act. Here are some of my favorites: Jim Gaffigan Thanks to Macht for the link! Robin Ince Thanks to David W. for the link! (By the way, anyone else think the “Banana Design” line (1:45 mark) is a reference to something we’ve seen before…?) Dane Cook Thanks to Sara for the link! Eddie Izzard… Read more
