I wouldn’t normally post email forwards… but this one deserves another look. (Despite the bad grammar.) It’s about that new movie that is generating controversy between atheists and Christians. You know, that one directed at children… Fred Claus. [tags]atheist, atheism, Golden Compass[/tags] Read more

After bringing us the ID/Creationist Bingo card, Skeptico has a new game for us all to play: John Edward/James van Praagh Bingo! Every time one of the psychics makes a comment on the card, cross it off the list. The post explains all the squares if they’re not obvious. This may not be much of a game, though: Usually the game is to get a straight line marked out. With these two bozos I think it should be possible to… Read more
Via Oz Atheist, a reader poses this question: Hi i found this blog through a google – like you i am not religious but that hasnt stopped a big problem – i am due to be married and both families are pushing for a full trad church wedding (and trad dress etc) and i dont like it – i feel cornered and trapped and not sure what to do. In terms of dating someone, race/culture has never mattered to me as much as the person herself. It’s not like I’m that cultural, anyway. But it’s never been a secret to me that my parents would prefer a brown, at-least-partially-religious bride. After my experience with the Indian matrimonial site Shaadi.com, I was convinced that finding an Indian wife was a long shot because of my atheism. I was so wrong. Providing Bibles would mean the hotel “would have to take care of every guest’s belief.” The article, from Newsweek,… Read more

This is from Paul Rolly’s column in the Salt Lake Tribune: Administrators at Muir Elementary in Bountiful [Utah] usually use the school’s e-mail system to notify parents about student achievement, PTA bake sales and upcoming events. But Principal Kevin Prusse recently used the school system to warn parents: Beware the anti-Narnia. Prusse alerted parents about the upcoming movie, “The Golden Compass,” starring Nicole Kidman. The movie is based on the first of a series of children’s books about killing God… Read more
I still say atheism is not a religion. But Paul and Jacki McMaster have started the First Church of Atheism. It’s a way to ordain atheist “ministers” who can preside over things like weddings, funerals, and commitment ceremonies. It’s legal and free to get ordained. Why did they start it? When Paul and Jacki were wed in 2006, they hired a non-denominational minister to perform the ceremony. They requested that the ceremony be entirely faith neutral, as they were both… Read more
